I'm in the market for a sub. I thought I was set on this http://www.edesignaudio.com/edv2/product_i...products_id=618 when somebody gave me this idea...

Buy this sub http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.c...tnumber=300-635 and this driver http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cf...tnumber=295-464 then sell the stock driver on ebay. You end up with a supposedly awesome sub for about $250.

My main concern is that the amp is only 150w and the upgraded driver is 400w rms / 700w peak. I was told this is not really an issue, and that the combo works great together. I don't know enough about this stuff to know for sure. I do know if I go with the $250 combo instead of the $600 ED sub, it'll be a hell of a lot easier to upgrade the PJ to a wuxga biggrin.gif What do you guys think?

Oh yeah, it's going in a (approx) 1000 sq. ft. unfinished basement. Carpet and full of junk but no walls. THANKS.

Is this feedback on simply swapping out the driver from people who have done it? As I too was under the impression that the Reference HF drivers wanted more oomph in the amp dept.

The person who recommended this has swapped it, yes. He uses in his HT and says it's great. I do not know the person personally and just wanted more opinions on whether a 150w amp and that sub could potentially sound great together, or if it sounds like a bad idea.

The driver does ~85db@ 1w.
150W instead of 400W, only means you'll do at most, 108db instead of 112. ohmy.gif

Still, your basement is a bit too large for a single 12".

I agree with denizen, You might need a bit more power to really fill that space well. You might want to contact that person and ask what size room he has the sub in. He may have gotten lucky and struck a golden combination of room size and resonance...

Thanks for the replies. I went ahead and ordered the eD sub. And wuxga stuff while I was at it smile.gif
