Samsung LTN154U1L04 15.4 WUXGA
G2A130 Controller
Miscellaneous fans
Cheap ebay'd 1000w ballast
Cheaper ebay'd 4000k 1000w Metal Halide bulb (4000k too far on the yellow side?)
Cheap ebay'd overhead projector (Replacing the light engine)

Cardboard + duct tape

This is going to be used with an XBOX 360 and a Laptop via VGA and DVI respectively.

Two questions:

1) Why is this going to fail? Is that monitor incompatible with the G2A Controller, perchance? Is a $50 used magnetic ballast likely to blow up on me? Is the 4000k bulb going to severely detriment my image quality? Am I likely to have issues replacing the overhead's light engine with the 1000w ballast?

2) What parts am I missing?

Well, I'd worry about the cardboard and duct tape bursting into flames...

You still need a lens set. I'd recommend the LL pro lens set. 2 fresnels and a triplet.

It's possible (probable?) that your 1000W lamp may have too large an arc to project well. You should see how large the lamp arc is. More than about 1.5" is defintiely a problem. Under 1" is really what you're looking for.

You will also (probably) want a reflector for the lamp.

Hehe. I'm pretty sure I've seen a cardboard and duct tape projector done before...

Sorry for not being clear, but I'm going to use an overhead projector and replace the light engine with higher powered metal halide one, so I'll be covered on the lens and triplet. This is my first projector and I'm not too handy yet, so I figured I'd start with just wiring and have the case provided for me, along with fresnels/triplet/reflector. After I get this up and running I'll probably rip out the screen and build something better.

Found a new M1000MLTAC5M-500K on ebay for cheap, I'll be getting that to go with a mogul base I just ordered from Lumenlabs. The bulbs I'm looking at are GE MVR1000/U. I'll have to look up the specs to see if it says anything about the lamp arc. It's probably a growth bulb, and something tells me that wouldn't work well for projection screens.

Looks like the bulbs have a 3.58 arc length - out of the question apparently.

Can a 1000w ballast be used with lower wattage lamps? I'm guessing it's going to be hard to find 1000w bulbs within spec.

The fresnels on most OHP are should be able to cover a 15" panel in a 4:3 aspect, I beleive they max out in width at 11" if your lucky to have found the larger ones. Your wuxga however is much wider than a 15" but shorter so in otherwords your 15.4 is going to be hanging out past the OHP fresnel sides.

Over powering lamps can be done but I wouldn't suggest matching a 400w to a 1000w ballast that is a bit extreme. Please check on arizonavideo's threads since he's our guru in this area or pm him.

I think that powering a 575w HMI might be possible with a 1000w ballast. AV is teaching me alot about ballasts and stuff biggrin.gif

The goal is to have the ballast make 95V at about 6A.

The S52 makes around 6A at 220V if you half the input voltage the output current will still be near 6A but the voltage will be around 110V.

For a quad tap ballast most have a 208V tap if hooked to a 110V input the output voltage will be about half. They also have a 240v tap which will make the output voltage less than half.

I'm really glad AV is helping me with this, I would love to eventually be able to use a 575w bulb without having to bid on old OHPs and hope that they don't come broken.

The OHP I've ordered has an 11.25 x 11.25 inch stage, about half an inch active area overhang on each side. The room I'm using for now requires me to scale the image down to fit on 108 or so inches of wall at a reasonable projection distance anyway, so it works out. I also won't be replacing the ballast for some time - it comes with a 575w HMI engine ;P Thanks to jonjandran for the link ;P

I'm hoping that when the time comes for me to use my 1000w ballast, I'll be able to afford short-arc 1000w quality lamps for my own enclosure.

Of course, by that time, we'll probably be using ultra HD displays :/

Thanks for all the help smile.gif
