I cannot see any reason why this bulb would not work in a DIY projector application. It has an internal ballast and puts out 7900 lumens, not spectacular, but it sure beats a 410 watt FXL. My buddy has a huge saltwater fish tank that used 3 400w ballasts and giant bulbs. He swtiched to these type bulbs and it looks even better to me than the metal halide bulbs did.

Has anyone tried these? Also, since my buddy no longer uses his metal halide bulbs he said I can have the ballasts, but he said they are huge. I'm sure they are probably at least 5 years old. Before I go inspect them what are the odds they are magnetic ballasts? Are they even worth investigating?

Well, aside from the fact that it's light source is too large...

a MH lamp will be brighter, watt for watt as well, but the size of the lamp itself is the big issue here.
