Hello,

I am building a pj using the standard 15" parts. After sacrificing a Dell monitor (accidentally ripped the FFC soldered directly to the PCB), I found an old laptop I successfully removed the LCD panel from. It is an IDTech ITSX95C.

I noticed that the front of the LCD panel is black, but the back is a silver color. There were several diffusers and filters for the backlight that I was able to remove (they were just sheets stuffed in there), but I was not sure if the silver coloring is part of the LCD itself, or is another coating or filter I need to remove. It appears like it is right on the glass.

Does anyone know if I have to remove this? Or is it part of the LCD and I can just leave everything how it is?

Thanks for your help.

It is a reflective layer. Removing it will make you projector brighter and the colors better.

It can usually be removed by starting and edge and pulling it up slowly. It usually comes up in 2 layers.

If it is stubborn you might have to water soak each layer for 3-4 hours to get it off.

Thanks for your help!

I was able to get the silver backing off, it looks like there were two layers, the silver then a gooey film...

However, on one corner, I noticed that a third layer was starting to pull up from the LCD, which was under the silver and gooey layers.. Mind you this is on the back of the LCD. Could it be a polarizer?? How do I know for sure?? I left it intact..

Is it common for polarizers to be on both the front and back of the LCD?

You can see in the attached picture.

Thanks again!

If it's clear, then it's not a polariser, it may be a tac layer. It shouldn't do any harm to lift it.

If it's dark, then it's a polariser, and you should try to get it back down.

Well, it's in a corner, so it won't be a major factor in your image anyway.

That could be a a bit confusing for some, you might want to edit that.

No no. I've been snacking on chocolate covered coffee beans... Now I've had too much, and I'm having typo issues.

There has to be a polarizer on the front and the back of the LCD for it to produce an image. If one of them is missing, no image.
