Hi all, been a member for a while now. I've enjoyed reading everyones projects and seeing pics of their design's and gained much.

I,ve been running my 1st pj for about a year nearly now with great results. It only took me 9 boxes to get what I've been using ( couldn't cut straight or get measurements right) but I was also a bit too hastey.

Anyway I've enjoyed my pj but earlier in the year the lcd acquired the dreaded vertical line ( have never been 100% happy with this lcd too thick and only cost me 20.00 quid). So I've planned to do a refit with a new lcd tv i've acquired recently and to make more adjustability and a more finished off pj.

I cant loadup the pic I want it only 112kb any help please . I've now fiured out wat iwas dioin wrong

As I said I've acquired a new 15" lcd which is a 15" lcd tv ( goodmans LD1501 paid 30 quid at my local tip). Now considering it is a budget tv I was plesantly surprised by what I found inside.

The control board 17MB01P-2 ( 2 Fcc cables and board not shown and their not too short either) with areil/s-video/composite/audio in and out/scart and pc input. These inputs are great as I've gotten a bit feedup of using a pc all the time. As you can see it one board which is convenient.

I did a quick test with a powerstar 150w mh lamp ( 3700k i think) and even though alignment was not good and Ag was still present the picture was great. I'm going unsplit this time, the pj will be slightly tilt back and I'll compensate by tilting the screen.

I'm presently using a dismantled Mh flood light which was most cost effective at the time. The lamp is a venture HIT 400w e40 base/ 4200k.

My pj box thought only just wide enough for it and no adjustability , so I intend to use this lamp Metal Halide 400 watt HQI-TS Cool White 4000 Kelvin.

Diameter 31mm
Length 206mm
Cap FC2
Colour Temperature Cool White 4000 kelvin
Average Life 10000 hrs
Wattage 400 watts

I'm a little unsure as to the colour temp but I think it'll be fine. If anyone's used this lamp or similar please let me know your thoughts on it. Also I'm going to try using a reflector with it from an old ohp i scraped awhile back.

Well thats it for now but I'll have some more pic of my proggress soon

I've been working out what I'll need to do for my new folded pj. There's quiet a bit of work involved so I'll just list it as follows:

1. Connect 19" pc monitor as temp tv
2. Dissmantle present pj
3. Cut about 150-200mm off the bottom of case
4.Reassemble case and mark any new fixing points
5.Cut/drill and assemble focusing mechanism
6.Adjust present safety glass & fresnel mounts
7.Cut fs mirror/ mirror base & mounts

It's late and I'm sure I've missed some thing but the plan is to do one stage at a time. I'll start with some of the new componets first that way I can leave the pj as is for a week or two. I"ll post more pic of my progress later.

nite all
spankdamonkey
nice score on the tv! Best of luck
daron620
Thanks spankdamonkey,

I know and I'm looking forward to using it. With my present 400w, no ag and unsplit the pictures going to look awesome.

Also awhile back I got myself an fs mirror ( local tip again) from a 50" phillips rptv for 1 pound. I cut it down a bit for my recent test with the new lcd tv; the first 2 cuts weren't great but the third was. So some glass cutting practice is in order soon.

I've been considering using a precondenser for sometime now. In this department though I lack alot of knowlegde but isn't a precondenser just a single lens right?.

Well I was wondering if that is the case would it be possible to use a singlet ohp projection lens ( of which I have one).

That's not a great picture I know. It measure's 87mm diameter, 4mm thickness and was macthed with ohp fresnels 220mm/330mm unsplit ( i think). So i could presume that the lens could have at least a 300mm fl length. Like I said I don't have much experience so any help and advise would be great.

Hi, have an update for you all.

After alot of thought I decide to build a new PJ box out of 18mm ply instead of MDF; look's so much nicer.
I've also gotten really handy with a router ( a first for me btw). I've routed so I'll get no light leaks. 1st pic is from the back, I'll be mounting the LCD controller, lamp control gear, fan and all other controls here for easy access. I've pick up a great metal grill as a cover ( pic to come).

2nd pic is from the front, can see the front top and bottom panels too. I'll put the frenels, lamp, LCD inside ( lol of course)

While shopping for bits at my local tip today I came across this little beauty. It's a hot water tank thermostat and is going to be used for fan on/off control. s

I wasn't sure if it was going to work at first so I got out my multimeter and found that it would. So I did a test setup with a 240v 120mm fan I plan on using, got out my lighter and voila it worked great. Its rated for 240volt @ 3Amps.
daron620
another pic, You can see the bi-metal (I think) Strip that actuates the micro switch. I had thought about mounting it facing the lamp area but I'm not too sure, so any advise would be great. I have read that others have mounted their thermostats near their ballast. I suppose some testing is in order soon.

Well thats it for now, I hope to have my frames cut and routed soon which I'll post pics of.

case parts routed, still have some routing to do though

Here's my 3 frames. The fresnel frames came out good but the lcd frame didn't. So some quick thinking solved the problem. I had cut my hole to large and so I'll be using some of the lcd's original frame.

Hi all, time for an update, I know its been awhile. The rebuild ( last pic in previous post) progressed in to a complete balls up which I was not happy about at all.

My 2nd oldest son Dannon was run over at the end of march ( this year) and I spent nearly a whole 4 month in hospital during his initail recovery. This caused much stress and the subsequent lack of concentration on the rebuild. Well time heals as they say and recently I've begun to feel better so begun a new plan for a new rebuild.

I'll be re-using the lcd/controller; although its not quite lived up to expectations/ the fresnels (220mm/330mm) and projection lens plus other bit and bobs. My dad has recently gotten a brand new table saw which I'll be using; this time round I'm going for accuracy no matter how many times i have to cut a piece of mdf ( within reason of course).

There are a few new Item which include 2 ballbearing slides for focusing and 2 more of these for lamp up/down adjustment. Im also going with a 150 watt HQI-TS powerstar NDL lamp ( new but cheap on ebay) which will be run at 250 watts ( initail overdrivng of this lamp has been good). I"m using a halogen flood light lamp holder ( modified) and will also be trying out the reflector from the flood light too. So without waffling on to much any/ all thoughts and advise welcome.

Btw I'll have some pics of the new stuff over the weekend.

back soon

Hi all, I've been so busy I've not had achance to do any updating. Time is my enemy at the moment and I haven't had enough of it to even make any more progress on the pj. In its present state it is watchable so I've put it off till after xmas.

Now I'm hoping some of you may be able to help with a Dell 17" E171FPB I got today for 6GBP at my local tip. It powers on fine but shows an all white screen. The questions:

1. What is the fault and what is the fix
2. Even with an all white screen would the lcd still dispaly an input from a graphic card ( as I plan on using it in the new pj, as the backlights would not be there this problem is viod anyhow).

I am already aware that my present fresnals are to small and I require new ones anyway, would I still be able to use the standard lumenlab lens as well as the 150watt HQI lamp (overdriven to 250watts). Any specific or general advise would be very much appreciated.

merry xmas and a happy new year

Do you have a 250 watt ballast? I would need to know more about the ballast setup and the color temp of the lamp before I could add any thing.

I home your son is recovering nicely.

Hi AV,
My son is doing great; thanks for asking. I originally started with a venture 250 watt lamp ( concerned about heat) which was a Mh flood lamp which was very cost effective as it had the ballast/lamp/cap/ignitor and lamp holder all together. Later I move up to a 400watt which is in use now.

so here's a list of what I got:

Osram 150w/HQI/NDL
Tridonic Acto ignitor ZRM 4.5-ES/B
20 uF cap
Tridonic Acto OMB 250 A504k ballast

I was able to speak to a guy from Pro-Logic (UK) before I purchased the 150watt lamp and he told me that the parts I had were ok. I've wired up the lamp and run it for about 20 mins with good results to my eyes.

I presume that I'll need a reflectorand precondenser for this lamp with a 17" lcd. Also what colour temp is NDL , I asking because during my reseach on the lamp one web site gave 4200k and another gave me 5200k so which is it ?. I hope this helps and the more info the better.

thanks

Hi all, an update

I won this Shuttle SXGA Box - VGA/DVI/Component/RGB, on ebay for use with the new lcd. It arrived 08/12/07 and I connected it up straight away. I was very pleased with the results but the vga pass through was a bit blurry looking. Later I discovered it won't accept 576p but that's ok. Here's a link for more info:

http://www.consoleplus.co.uk/product_info....dvicomponentrgb

I've also won a E171FPB sold for spares off ebay for under 20GBP and hopefully will be able to repair the other one mentioned in an earlier post. I had planned on using this 17" but that would require some larger fresnels which I just can't afford right now; so Ill be going with the E151FPB model on the downstairs computer.

back sonn with more progress.

Hi all, and a happy new year

It's been awhile and unfortunately no progress on my rebuild. I've got the time but lack the funds for parts; like a desent reflector/ new fresnels and a pre-con. Now I've been quite envious of those who have been able to strip ohp's for parts but not any more. I was lucky enough to save an 3M 9800 from the metel bin at my local tip this week ( paid a fiver for it).

So now I'm all excited and my rebuild plans have changed slightly. Although I still plan to go unsplit but I'll be using all the parts from the 3M 9800 ( not the original lamp though).

What I'm not sure on is the fresnal focal lenghts , I was able to find out that the fresnel's are a fresnel doublet 133.8mm (unsplit) / triplet 340mm / 60mm reflector. Ive did some rough measurements and think the fresnels are just large enough for a 14" lcd and am bidding on one now on ebay.

I know that focal lenghts of fresnel's change when in an unsplit configuration and did come across some simple calculations on the forum sometime ago but I can't find that info anymore so if some one here know's please let me know.

If anyone has more info or has used this model for their pj some measurements or advise would be appreciated.

Another pic of the 3M 9800

You can see the light engine reflector/ pre-con/ hot mirror (I think)
