Where might i go read about why i can or cannot use a laptop monitor?

Also, where might i go read about using an LCD from a random monitor, without the electronics that came with it.

I'de like to do a bit of reading before i start buggin people.

i'm not sure there is a dedicated thread to finding a "universal" LCD controller, but controllers with 10.6" 1280x768 panels, 7.2" 1280x768 panels, and 15.4" 1920x1200 panels seem to be the three most discussed in these forums.
