ok for those of you interested in the vertical design, i have built two of them and they work well. you can also invert it and place the lens on the bottom and the light on the top, but take in consideration your LCD placement.
ArchibaldTuttle
The fcc thing dangles downward toward the lamp side of the box on the lens side right?
joecnc2006
would not let it dangle... lol but yes thats the orientaion of it.

New to the forum here and have just ordered my lenses. My question is how does the vertical one go with heating issues.

If you follow the basic principles of the standard LL Projector you will have not problem, just use a good 120mm fan maybe a 120v one.

im allready planing my next projector smile.gif 17 or 19" posably a widescreen... the spec look sweet on the 17" dell biggrin.gif... and want to use the new zoom lense smile.gif

and thinking about a vertical design... but unsure yet.. ither way there is gunna need to be some fs mirrors needed to fold the light / reduce over all size smile.gif

IS this the measurements for the standard lens? What would the measurements look like for the zoom lens box?

Hi All, Well after much reading and deciding, I would like to build the inverted vertical 15" pj. Its going in the bedroom, so i'm going to cut a hole in the ceiling and only going to have part of the pj sticking out down from the ceiling. The rest will be in the attic, attached to the ceiling joists. I'm doing it this way because of room size and layout.

I have everything figured out, except one. How does keystoning work for the vertical model.

All help would be greatly appreciated.

hinge the fresnel in the center.

Hi Joe,

Nice box, and I have to say, that's the design for me.
I just wonder, what about focusing in this construction, Do You move the hole box?

Hi Joe

I like this design and have decided to scrap my large bulky and very heavy box and replace it with your design and make it from Beach Ply.

Can you please tell me the dimensions of the FS Mirror you used. I am using a panel from a 15" screen measuring 12 5/16" * 9 5/16" so I'm hoping its about the same.

I found this site in the UK which given the variety of sizes of FS mirrors they can supply, should have one suitable.

I am wondering how large the FS mirror has to be in this design (since I am having difficulty finding a larger FS mirror that isn't expensive). So would something like this modification work (see diagram or look here: http://dev.willetts.com/mike/versus_projectors.jpg)? I know that x1+y1=x2+y2 mathematically (assuming it is constructed properly)... but what about the quality? Would making a taller box, and using a smaller mirror (m2 in the diagram) degrade the quality or does anyone see any other problems with this approach? Thanks for the feedback.

joe2000chevy are those the diemensions you used on your folded projector?

Hey, glad I found this thread!

I am planning on building a vertical pj myself. About using a SMALL FS Mirror mikerichmond, I will be using the one off my OHP.

I posted some crappy drawings over in public discussion of it (before I discovered this thread).
Link to Thread

the design is similar to an OHP as the mirror is external and on top. This allows you to adjust the picture without having to "tilt" your projector.

I'd like to hear a few opinions on the design before I start sawing wood.

Thanks

Hey joe can you post some of your pictures of your finished projector results??

Can you give more info abaut this project?

Same pic's of the interior and results.
Measures of your mirror.

You do make this project, or it's only a draw?rolleyes.gif

Yes, he built it. It's outlined in this thread:Joe's New Design

He revamped the design to incorporate a metal-frame as well, follow the link in the thread that I linked to above for more details.

Ah, okay, like so many others I have spent a lot of time reading and researching before committing to building. I have at last decided to build the folded 15" inverted, so that I can mount it on the wall above our sofa and nor bump our heads on it when we sit down or stand.

The outside will be the full, rectangular-shaped box. The light will be at the top, with the fan(s); the lens near the bottom. I plan to use the space behind the mirror for wires and such.

And I am using 1/2" oak plywood instead of the 3/4" for weight considerations. So I have recalculated the dimensions for the quarter-inch difference.

Thanks to everyone all over the place who have contributed to the information I have needed. I'm sure I'll need more. wink.gif

Joe, any chance you'd update these measurements to using a 17''Lcd with Pro Lens? Thanks either way in advance. You're design exactly fits my needs and is one of if not the best on this site.
p.s. Any projected pics? rolleyes.gif

Hey, Agent! First, gotta say I love the Horizontal design you completed. Have you given up on the vertical approach altogether? At the moment, I am using an OHP/LCD Panel, but I finally scored a nice 15" monitor, and it's time to get down to some serious construction.

I always figured on using my OHP as the model for my new pj and your drawer, minus the cap around the FS mirror is pretty much what I had envisioned, although, I can see that the cap would help cut down on the ambiant light.

Just curiuos on any more thoughts you might have on your design. From the drawings, it does seem that the lower portion is a little bit longer than it needs to be, but I could be wrong dry.gif

Vertical 15" is working fine for me right now. It's a solid design and a space saver.

Would placing the mirror in front of the projection lens (aka overhead projector style) work as well? You will need a smaller mirror and the angle will also be adjustable.

Yes it would work, however it defeats the purpose of cutting the size of the projector down, but for a taller standing unit it will work.

Hi All, I'm very new to these forums, still in the research phase!

I'd love to build the 'vertical model' but I have a few queries, mainly, is there any issue with sagging of the centre of the lcd panel or the fresnels due to gravity?

I like this desire but how to locate the LCD? still upside down backward?

I am trying to build a folded design for a 17" panel (non vertical). Is this correct or is it totally wrong. I want to build something similar to brains. Please let me know and how much does a fs mirror cost for a 17". Thankyou
pun15her
Hi shivers20.
As you are talking 17",I presume you are looking at the pro lenses???
If so,read on...
The distance from the lcd to the triplet should be 575mm.
EG:
From lcd to mirror=425mm,mirror to triplet is 150mm.
425 + 150 = 575.
Hope this explains it.
Cheers P smile.gif

Punisher your da man. This is exactly was I was looking for. I am going to be using the pro lenses. Thanks a bunch!

Joe, an excellent, compact design that I've decided to attempt (See Here). Just one question though, the FCC cables and control circuit boards have their orientation so as to be positioned below the lcd and rear fres, ie inside the lamp section of the box. Is it possible to keep the lcd in the same position but instead of the FCCs bending downwards, bend them upwards so that the circuits are in the cooler top section? Or would the bending of the FCCs opposite to their normal shape destroy them? Just thinking that they would be better off away from the heat of the lamp.
nintari
stupid question but worth asking smile.gif

with the design on the main page is this all outer dimensions assuming for 3/4" MDF?
gros20
is the box square? and how big deoes fs mirror need to be

thanks joe for the design! i made my design based off yours and it's worked out awesomely!

I am new this forum but have been working on this idea for along time . Now finally at age 41 I m going to give it a try.. I was considering due to space problems about building the normal 15 inch poject .. then stand it up on end , with fans on the sides... then use a lens from a ohp mounted on top of the box over the original lens to project it on to the wall.. I just ordered my 3rd lcd , actually won it on ebay FPD1530 Gateway Dated 2002 so I hope no ffc issues..

Hmm, was wondering if anyone would be able to give me some idea how this would have to be changed for use with a 15.4" screen (widescreen) LCD panel, would you just change the dimension acourding to % increase in screen size or something else. My condenser frensel lense has a focal length of 220mm and my field frensel lense has a focal length of 650mm, my lense has a FL of 320mm and my precondensor has a FL of 290mm. Any help would be hugely appreciated.

For a relaxing time, buy new lenses.
Your field fresnel needs to have the same or slightly higher FL than your trip. 650 mm with a 320 mm trip is not going to be very relaxing.
You should look into getting either a 330 mm fresnel or get a pro triplet.

I don't know anything about precondensers. However, the position of all these parts is based on the optics, not the screen size. I am building a 17 inch vertical, but the spacing will be pretty much the same, since I'm using the standard LL triplet (the 320mm FL one.) If you decide to use the 650mm with the pro lens, you'll have to adjust your size.
