Was wondering if anyone was running this setup? and if you are what kind of PVR card are you using? i cant find anything as to whats compatible and what's not.

I plan to use it mostly to just watch TV, and play my Xbox, however i will do a fair bit of recording.

If you havnt yet heard of Linux MCE check it out: http://linuxmce.com/ watch the demo video.

it uses mythtv for it's main video handleing so probably anything from the mythtv.org/wiki/ under hardware --> video capture cards (there are standard and HD capture cards). Most people use either the hauppauge 150 or 500 for standard def and then hd is a crapshoot as to what to use. I have a ati hdtv wonder and a Avermedia a180 and they both work fine

Over at revision3.com they have an episode with Kevin Rose and some other guy, showing how to setup a computer for mythtv and linux. You should check it out, it's cool.

I'm using Ubuntu 6.10 and myth on that with a Hauppauge pvr-150. That's about as easy as it gets, just follow the wiki guide on ubuntu.com and it works.

The only problem I'm having currently is I screwed up the lirc install and am having problems correcting that.

I was gonna try out LinuxMCE but it's only available for Ubuntu 6.10 right now (afaik) and I'm running Fedora Core 5... dry.gif Maybe if I get up the courage to start over again I'll try it out. By the way, I'm running 1xPVR350, 2xPVR150s, 1xDvico Fusion 5 RT Lite (for HD).

How does the HD work for you? How are you receiving it, antenna?
Lothar
HD works just dandy. I'm receiving via QAM. No antenna yet. I'm thinking about one of the DIY ones though. But I'm in no hurry because I'd receive the same channels in the end. And my wife prefers analog over HD anyway cause our TV is 4:3.

Ok great. I heard Hauppauge was rather unsupportive of linux so i was a little afraid to just jump in.

as for my xbox, i have a thing that converts all the signals into a cable line. would i just be able to put that into my PVR card and play the xbox?

The guy in that video with kevin rose, is that Double D of The Broken?

wow, just watched the linuxMCE video... interesting. I just installed, or started to install ubuntu on a whim, and that seemed alright, although it wouldnt play a DVD right off the bat, I was referred to all sorts of linux 'work'... which is the reason im hesitant to use it. But the linuxMCE looks promising, although it looks a lot like the old Phast systems, or at least in integration functionality, and I like the idea of the poor-mans kaleidescape (look it up, theyre badass.), anyways, so the install they show in that video (the google one with the british guy), is that a full OS with MCE running over it, meaning can I use it for regular PC functionality, and also I would need some sort of free windows emulator, unless it actually supports WinDVD7, and a few other basic programs. Anyways, Im looking to build a linux machine for the experience, but want something easy to start with... any linux fanatics got tips for me??

Anyone know how to run windows programs on kubuntu/linuxmce??? i cant tell if WINE supports kubuntu, or just ubuntu... I just wanted to know if I can get winDVD7 onto it....

I'm fairly certain that winDVD is a directshow based application & won't run on Linux.

If I were you, I would just use VLC or Xine.
both applications handle DVD's rather well as far as i'm concerned.
