I am curious, what do you think the potential for the image quality is compared to a regular projector since it has to transmit through the screen material, as opposed to just bouncing off the surface.
joecnc2006
the image is degraded slightly, but because the throw distance is shorter there is no screen door which helps in that aspect.

I'm just blown away. I can't believe that you guys are able to build your own RPTV. Keep up the great work!

Update:

Just have a little slowdown, we want a very good screen material so we are still testing different options.

I know all of you are so busy with these new projects but it would be neat to see some pictures with the differenet screen material you are trying. I am curios about the frame work on the RPTV, would you cover it with an obaque material or what?
joecnc2006
more than likely i will be using a black vinyl over it to block out ant unwanted light.

Hello all.

I am very interested in making one of these RPTV's in widescreen with a folded design for the projector.
I have attached a image of a rough draft and was wondering what kind of optics would be needed to make this happen?
What would be the minimum throw distance needed to make an image on screen this large, or small compared to others biggrin.gif
I want to make the projector side-ways to make a shorter, skinnier more lowprofile set.

Very happy that I have found this wonderful site, as it has a wealth of knowledge to pull from. Props to all who have contributed. cool.gif

Thanks in advance.

Whats the verdict on the screen material since I never see you anymore Joe

The more I look at the pictures in the pinned section the more it becomes clear that I have a lot to learn blink.gif my first design was based of the folded FRONT projector design wink.gif , now I see that this is it's own unique REAR projector design wink.gif

Now I'm going to soak up as much as I can learn, while possibly helping out with some stuff that I may already know untill you guys give up the goods cool.gif

Hurry, hurry, hurry! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Now that I look at it a little more I am thinking that my original idea in using a folded front projection design would be better.

That design is 73" tall!!, no way that's going in my house!

The only problem now is the optics, can it spread it out enough for a television of about 50" to 60" in height?

Maybe even a shorter design for a 50"+ screen.

Would new optics have to be sought out, or will the ones available here do?

Well Guys sorry for the delay, i have been working out of town for almost a solid month with hardly any brakes, I should be back here for a little while and I will be working further on the RPTV and give a status report soon.

I am looking forward to finishing this and getting it off the ground for others also.

Is the RPTV dead? I thought someone had a decent RPTV built, just needed to try out some new screens?? Any updates on the progress of this project?

Hi all... I am definitely interested in the rear projection project. One is because of space reasons. Due to the odd shape of the room the seating is at the very back and any projector in front would be in the way. Two is that my house is an old arts and crafts style bungalow that I am (slowly) fixing up and I'd like to have a tv/cabinet that looks not so modern and plastic-y.

Thanks!
