Ok, the plan is to get this hunk of wood loaded up with a projector. (dont worry i have all the peices)
i cant find my tape measureur so i will be putting the measurements up later. but the goal is to get this baby to look like gold without using up extra space. i'm nervous cause i'm not sure what i'm doing just yet. ohnoes.gif but ill figure it out.

any input is appreciated

Hey, I know that model TV... I got one off of Craigs List for $25... I salvaged the mirror, screen, and control panel on the top. I building a new case rather than try to find the lenses necessary to get the light path to fit in the existing case. I'm a standard LL 15" projector... so the distance from the triplet to the screen to get a 52" picture is about 56".... In this case the focal length calculator will be your friend.

FYI: that mirror isn't coated like most of the new FS mirrors. Don't touch it... finger prints become perminate fast. And don't clean it.

Whoa thanks for that info, i wouldnt want to ruin the mirror. i got this off craigslist for 15$
i tried tosalvage it but the FlyPr is bad, it wasnt giving power to the filaments
i also noticed you said 52", my screen is 46" i was thinking since my 15" LCD is no good after stripping it and testing it was a fail. just getting a 5" LCD and sticking it right behind an RPTV Lens would be a good way to go, Like the Cheap PSone Projector. Than all i need is a few Bulbs and a couple other Mods and i will be good to go
itachikitsune
Ok slightly different model... but the construction looks the same. Watch those RPTV lenses a lot of them only work with curved CRT projection tubes. or so I've read. And they have a focal point very near the lense. Good luck with your build.

i wont be using the lenses from the T.V. i will be using the PSone build that Tgreenwood did. it has a 1:1 ratio. i can get 4 feet from the projector with a little bit of hard work. i will be trying an 8 bulb setup and try to "t" it into the screen. i dont know how well it will work though, but it's worth a try.

i made a quick rough sketch of how it should work out. hopefully i have a little extra space by removing the Control board from the original parts. i should be able to recess the mirror in there and might just give me enough throw to fill the screen up. if anything the Tv will have a big butt.. i dont mind having it extend out a few inches. i can get 3 feet minimal out of this. i havent measured the potential from use of an extra fold
the measurement i did was from use of having the lense face upward like the original CRT's design was.
with this i shouls b able to get the extra foot i need. and add as much light as i need, eventually i will put a quality 5" screen in there and make an LED aray for the light source. besides, with this mod i can have AV In, VGA in and i will try to stick a cable box in there for a tuner. either that or stick a mini PC in there.

i got ahold of a PSOne (sony brand) screen today. from a user here on the forum.i also ordered the lens. all thats left is to buy buy some mylar and get some bulbs and i will be good to go.

this TV should be done by June.
Lothar
I'm interested in seeing how your light box turns out if you're going to be using multiple bulbs. Good luck.
ironslave
well, looking around on the forum i had a sudden strike of idea.

being tht this is an RPTV i "shouldnt" have to worry about the conventional problems of ambient lightting. so heres the plan.

i will leave the backlight on the LCD for initial Testing and see what posibilities of light i can soak out of it. i noticed in another plog for setting up the same thing that i am following, he left the backlight on it and the screen was decent to say the least. i was suprised. i figure with the brightness mod on the lcd and the AG stripping i just might make this one work out right. if not... well i was thinking of taking and adding super bright LED's to the sides of it ive seen a mod for this one before and should work well, i just hope they arent to bright and cause hot spotting. I could also channel the bulbs light into the backlight panel. i will see how all goes though.

this is in the interest of trying to get a usable amount of light into the alotted area without giving up screen space. my ultimate goal if a full 46" projection without hacking up the tv or using a maze of mirrors that will lose my light.

1 t.v. 46" 15$
1 PSOne LCD 30$ shipped
1 T.V. Lens 24$ shipped

total cost so far: 69$

i recived my PSOne screen today. striping it down was rather simple. it looks like i will need an FCC extention as the FCC is a mear 1/2" long. i will be stripping the AG tomorrow. and i am still waiting on the lens. and will perform the brightness fix at a later date as the component i need to bridge is small and want to test the difference between the brightness fixes and post screenshots
ironslave
ok. ive been just browsing around in therse forums and i am just itching to get this started. the lens should be in tomorrow. hopefully.... and than i still have to do the AG removal and the brightness mod later... but i plan on laying the lens on a counter top and moving the screen away to get my needed distance for projection. i am not to good at math so this way will be easier to handle...

i have come with a plan to extend out of the box if needed. i will boar a hole in the back. and angle it as best as i can to get a good throw... i still need a foot of space more than what is available.. so we shall see.

ok... so a cable box is expensive.... i will instead hunt down a non tape playing vcr and use that instead.... smile.gif not only can i get to disasemble an rptv but a vcr as well... YAY>
i will also get a COAX in, a tuner, a few AV in's a COAX out and an AV out. i just have to figure out how to convert COAX to RCA..... cause i am not sure if the vcr i end up with will be able to send the cable signal out through RCA

The lens arrived today... i will begin initial testing tomorrow... pics to come.... maybe...

ironslave
O.k... so the projector has failed initial testing and will require a little more work than needed. to get the image to the size i need to fill the screen. i have to mount the lens about an inch away from the LCD or i loose focus. i don't get a clear image from the screen with the LCD against it unless the image is at least 60"
also. i performed the brightness mod with only solder it was rather simple and i am amazed that i did it on a micro board...
the AG was easy with a 2 hour soak.
tgreenwood
Did you take the screws out of the focusing barrel of the lens? If the screws are still there, they severely limit the range that the image can be focused. What size diagonal projection are you going for? Is 46 inches right?

Tgreenwood
ironslave
it would be safe to focus past the screws givin focus lenght i would assume, i adjusted the focus within the given limit of the screws but to no avail... but if i can remove the screws and still be in the safe zone than i shall do so.. Thank Tgreenwood

but yes 46" is the goal

i wil be working on this tomorrow... (at work) but i think that the backlight is not good enough to work on the RPTV... i need to hunt down a couple of mirrors firstly which i will do tomorrow

edit: you know how everyone has been complaining of the uneven brightness... i think it may be caused by the brightness mod... as i have the same issue... but didnt notice it until after the application of the brightness mod.
ChuckL
Sounds like you are on your way. Sorry the LCD was bad, Brandon gave it to me and he said lth lcd was good but the back light was out, Oh well. On an lcd that small you should not have a brightness problem. Exactly which mod did you do?

Sweet FS mirror sources i was just looking for these as i sit here at work Bored.

look a the Tgreenwood cheap psone under small panels, it basicly bypasses a transistor.

lol

Whoa! i just looked at costs... i hope this wont need to be to much bigger than a foot...

i will use regular mirrors first to test than buy those. as i dont know exact distances yet because im not even sure where i will mount the lens yet. it is rather large.

ive also considered using an MH bulb that i may strip out of a projector... i will be running out to the colleges to check warehouses for OHP's
ironslave
ok so i tired to show a screenie of the PSOne projecting onto the wall in a very dim room with using only the backlight to show how it comes out... but the camera wont catch it... idky but it's a cheapie.

the screen is brighter with the brightness mod and very viewable... but it was washed out and the colors were not all too hot... i deem the backlight method unusable.
ChuckL
OHP replacement bulbs can be VERY pricy and you will only get 3 to 400 hrs from them. Try this place, An FC2 type light may work well for you.

1st are the bulbs to start with, these are 100 watt bulbs that burn at 6000K 9.98$
total of 4500 Lumens, unfortunately there is no CRI provided nor is there detailed information on their website

next are the sockets... came from a 4 bulb bathroom fixture. .99¢

I just don't understand this strange love of CFL lighting.

All the CFL have less than a 90 CRI and all will make a fuzzy picture. Most of the light is wasted so they will be less efficient than a CDM 150 by a large amount.

The CDM 150 is a vary good lamp with a 96 CRI and the cost is fairly low.
ChuckL
Son
Multiple bulbs will not work and AZ is correct about the CRI of CFL lighting. Point light source is a requirment even in a small PJ. 150w MH would be fairly cheap and much eaiser to manage. Just the old man's 2 cents. What kind of lens is that?
tgreenwood
I think that ironslave is using my plog as a guide.

The big fluorescents that I have used have a CRI of 91. The small GE daylight fluorescents that I have in my projector produce beautiful colors at 6500K color temp even though the CRI is only 82. It appears that CRI isn't that critical as long as the fluorescent has a good color temp.

I don't really understand the idea that a fluorescent would make a fuzzy picture. I can see the individual RGB sub-pixels on my screen when I look closely. Seems sharp enough to me.

Fluorescents work really well with TV projection lenses like ironslave is using when the enclosure around the bulbs is lined with reflective material (like mylar) to get most of the light to the LCD. Also, the LCD is the same size as the lens and is right against the Lens. Very little light is wasted.

If a big fluorescent was used in a standard build with the usual reflector, yes, most of the light would be wasted, and little of the light would hit the triplet. The lens he is using and the use of a small LCD makes Fluorescents practical.

I like fluorescents because they run cooler, screw into a standard light socket, and are cheaply and easily available at my local Wal-mart.

The only thing I would do differently than ironslave is to have 8000 lumens or more from the bulbs, but maybe he is right that the RPTV won't need as many lumens to be easily viewable.

More PicS! laugh.gif

ok, progress as goes... i built the light box, with only 3 bulbs lighting was uneven and poor... but this is just a test build. it took about 4 hours to accomplish.

first photo: the insides. lined up and ready to go...
i had a mis calc with the contoller board so i cut a hole in the top and slid it through.. i need to get an FFC extender....

than the front, i mounted the LCD to the box with the mount used in the PSOne, than i put large screws and washers on the lens and mounted it to the box with the washers on the inside overlapping the LCD mount to hold it in place.

the fixtures are held in place by the box. and fit tight... just a little bit of wiggle room.
here is where the mess up looks bad and leaks light.. like i said,, FFC is too short and i forgot.
heres a close up on the inside of the box... i used 2 screws, some cardboard, and some masking tape to make a holding stand for the controller board. it is frustrating trying to install that ffc though. i am very limited.
the flap of mylar covered cardboard covers up the contoller board as it was soaking up much needed light.

overall this build is only to determin the length of space required to fill the screen... this was a devistating 57" a number which requires that i hack away at the back end of the t.v. to install this... this will be a long project...

the quality in a dark room were actually not bad... and the further the throw the better it looked... to a point.. it looked much better than with the backlight but i need to try a better movie than ghostship... too dark... iwill try something better later..

i will make an attempt at screenies tomorrow night... but it may not happen as i have nowhere to really project onto at the moment... but i will prolly take to my bedroom as theres plenty of space and wall plugs.

i will add the 4th bulb tomorrow. i must study for my staff test and will likely not get to much more time this weekend

pops... i know the usual requirements... but i was very intersted in Tgreenwoods results... and i have not seen very many builds done like that... i had to try it out... i think you should take a look at it... if you ever want to make a cheap on the go PJ. this is a decent build, even though the quality is on the low side but most definately good enough to enjoy a couple movies off of and quality can be improved with better LCD . besides... i was going to install these in the house anyway... so i can use them if/when i go to nicer bulbs

click to go to tgreenwoods page

I have noticed the fuzziness of the screen but it is not too bad... i can see everything fine, the only issue i have is the resolution so far
once i finish this build i will more than likely either rebuild or do another build on a HAMI.
but for now i am on a budget...

if this rptv project fails i will move this to an on the go PJ

and the lens is a 5" RPTV lens i bought through herbach.com it is 113MM
ironslave
screenies. i went to walmart to do stuff an decided to grab a bulb, hooked it up in my bedroom and did some screenies...
it was quite bright in there so they didnt come out to well... but it works. its evenly lit now....

laugh.gif i got it loaded into the TV and it came out just as expected!
the picture was bright and looked nice.... allthough rather small... still in need of mirrors.

but some SCREENIES!

it was still a little bright outside so alot of reflection from the screen.... but it's WORKING!
thise line are from the camera

the screen isnt really centered, and it was upside down, but thats fixed.

also i added a fan. the batteries on the cam died so youl have to wait.
ironslave
this is sad that my camera cannot take a decent photo of the results, i just watched over the hedge on the PJ and the results were a big + for a 60$ PJ. it is watchable with little light in the room, but in a mostly dark room the reults were good, contrast was good, brightness was good, and color was great. the only thing bugging me so far was the lack of resolution as it made the background kind of fuzzy and the minor screen door effect. i think on a panel of at least VGA it would be fully enjoyable... but this setup is tollerable...

i cant wait to pop this inside the TV.

still no mirror though.
ironslave
ok, i am posting one of the poor photos i took....

HI Ironslave

Your RPTV screen looks to be reflective..possibly therefore has a sun protective reflective layer..I had one on mine and the kids loved it looking at themselves..I removed that layer and the brightness improved as well as overall picture quality.

Might be worth a look see if you have a transparent top layer that can be removed to compare with and without..

Good luck with it !
ironslave
it does seem to have this layer. but seing as i am using this el-cheapo design the light blocking feature might or might not be a good idea.

thanks for the info i will take a peek at it
ChuckL
Any Progress?
ironslave
nope, i am on hold till next month, i had to register the car and have no play money smile.gif

but i sure am exited,

i might run out and buy a Rear surface mirror for testing, than when i have my final setup done i will know mirror sizes and lay down for them.

ironslave
ok, so to resurect an old project... I am getting ready to move and will hopefully be cashing in on a car accident i had a while back. once that is finished I will continue the work on this projector. it has been mongering in the closet for a while since I have been oh so busy.
dreiseratops
Keep us posted. You just got a new reader. I also have a psone screen waiting to be projected. I been waiting on a power adapter for it for a month. only a couple more days...

BTW any info an the proper FFC needed for one o' these?

I have just acquired the exact same TV! There is something wrong with the fly back I think. It powers up for a short time then goes out. Thats OK, I have an Epson 77c with this TV's name on it.
