Full Version: Tv Boxes To Vga

I have my projector for the most part almost finished. I want to know what products have any of you used or tried that work for using your electronics for example xbox, ps2, etc. I am looking for an rca to vga adapter.

I've seen many devices that do this, and some of the reviews I've read about them are just awful that these things rarely do what they are supposed to. However here are two on newegg that I am looking at that seem to have the best reviews

K world tv/vga box
K world tv/vga box w/component

I am looking that the bottom one, because someday I might upgrade to the hi-def av pack for my xbox

I am interested to see what others have tried and what has or has not worked

I haven't had any experience with any of the boxes, but I have thought about it. Something you should look into though, they just released some new ones. There's a 1680EX box that supports up to 1080i and looks to be good, though time will tell. Here's the link:

http://www.kworld.com.tw/en/index_analog.htm

There's also a 1440ex box, but the only difference I saw was the types of displays they support.

The kworld works okay, but if you have one of the 15.4 wide screen monitors or the 14.1 wide screen It will not work without stretching the res. The kworld HD pro does not support 1280:720,768, or 800. How ever it does support 1440:900 and larger. They are okay but in certain situations they will go back to the TV signal res. I have not tried it with dvd players I normaly use the dvd player in the computer or the game consoles.

Now if you have one of the above mentioned monitors that only go up to 1280:800 you can use this one

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=TV-BOX&cat=MON it is also only half the price of the kworld boxes

well yesterday I went ahead and purchased the KWORLD TV1680R from newegg yesterday. I haven't heard much in the way of these vga boxes other than alot of people using the x2vga. So i figured i would go ahead and give this one a try.

Kworld HDLCD TV BOX TV1680R

well I've been running it for a couple days now and I love it, it works well with my 15.4" monitor and the remote has excellent range. I don't have cable tv so i couldn't test out the tv functionality, and I don't yet have component cables for the xbox, but all in time, xmbc does everything that I need it too thus far
yappypappy
I am looking at the kworld one also but the 1440 glad it works , let me know if you hook up to cable or sat....
hammerbutt
So with one of these Kworld 1680 tuners and a 1280 x1024 panel what resolution could you actually get without a distorted picture?

Waldo686,

Well now that you have had the Kworld TV1680R for a few months, do you still like it? Have you found any draw backs or it all green lights?

Cheers!

i've used the philips e-box which worked extremely well, but i think it's at the higher end of the price range you're looking at.

I just picked up the kworld 1440 as that is all they had there. 60cdn from tiger dirct. I used it on lcd moniter that I had laying around and it worked perfectly and looked great to use on pj. I put on pj and had problems with it ,but it was related to ffc issues and I have to fix before i can give you guys an idea on this box for pj , but looks like it will be doable for now and will post more once I get it going in pj..

I recently purchased this product off of ebay with success. It did however come in the mail with a loose screw or something inside. when i shake it i can hear it rattling around loudly. I plugged it in and it works. I can now play my playstation on my computer monitor. Soon I will have my projector done and will be using it on that. I paid $23.88 plus $21 shipping and handling.

nitestalker - how is the scaling & deblocking with that?

To be honest I am not 100% impressed. As soon as i plugged everything in I notice what I can only think of to describe as... Resolution lines ... I am guessing I must of dropped the amount of energy going to the monitor enough to effect it visually but not enough to dissable it.

I also notice if i sat back in my chair it isnt hardly noticable... but i am concerned about what it will look like projected...hopefully my parts will come in soon and i will find out... i recieved a email last nite that my ebay item who's auction ended a week ago hasnt been shipped yet. they wanted to notify that it is being prepped for shipment as of yesterday.

For a serious gamer....i am not sure exactly how beneficial this product would serve...yet i found it in the video game systems section of ebay being sold. Nevertheless, I am thinking that it might be fine for watching movies and such... i will let you all know...I plan on experimenting with my PS2 and Xbox and several PC games. I favor Simulation games. I am interested to see how a blue sky will work out on these projections....I love Ace Combat series on PS2

I forgot to mention that after using the computer for a few hrs my eyes may have got used to those so called lines or whatever they were... i can no longer see them.

I've tried the Kworld 1440, I bought it local at Fry's. I tested it out for a week and ended up taking it back. It just didn't look all that great. I only have a 480p dvd player so that is what I inputted into the tv box. It detected the 480p but it didnt look as good as playing a dvd in the computer and outputing to the projector via vga. The wife thought it looked bad, not as sharp and bad colors.

Trust me, I've been there with vga boxes... go with a better lcd. Many hd cable boxes do 1080p, but when they go to an analog station they switch over to 480i which many vga boxes can't do. Xbox is the same way only in 1080i to 480i. Go with an LG flatron 173wt it is a little better than 720p native, high contrast, can accept signals from 1080p down to 480i, hdcp compliant, has component in, and has dvi-i. Check ebay for one, it'll be worth it. I got mine for $95 shipped.

yeah I love it works great.
one oddity about it is my receiver and the tv box remotes must run on the same frequency, So when I adjust the volume they both change, not always to the intended effect

Other than that it could use a longer vga cable, the one that's included is kind of short

Right now my little brother is up visiting playing 360 via component on it, and its set up for 720p, which looks very nice

REplying again to my own comment. I am going to take this 1440 back, as I have been playing with it for a couple of days now,, Some stations look awsome on it and the others are really fuzzy and washed out. I have hooked it up directly to sat box with the cable and changed back over to s video as it has a better picture. Tried ps2 on it , doesn't look very good at all . Last night it started to act up and the picture was moving up and down , I had to turn off and it adjusted itself o.k. , I find the higher stations are clearer ,but overall the picture is washed out and very orangish and not consistent , I am going to get the 1680 if they have in stock .. Just to let you guys know, Right now I wouldn't reccomend the 1440 ,but it does work ,not bad ,but not very good . Sorry about the earlier good comments on it , just got excited about finally hooking up to sat. box and first impressions were good.. Note the sports channels do look great ,, basketball , football ,ect. I think it is mainly the way they broadcast ,not sure if that has anything to do with it though.. I don't have hd.. I will let you know which one I get , when i take back..

Just took back the 1440 , ordered the 1680 ,should be in by next week..

I'm using one of these right now. I got it for $18.98 shipped from ebay.
Listing said it wouldn't power up. I got it, opened it, and it was missing the power supply board to mainboard cables.. I happened to have a set of from another one, plugged them in, and it works perfectly (after turning it into a standalone unit). The best part for me about it is the very rich colors and how great it makes regular standard definition cable look on a 120" screen, plus all the inputs it has.

Im also using an ebox, the FTR9955... its great for PS2, except it doesnt like the dropouts over component, so a friend on here told me to try s-vid and it still looks great, using trimension (digital natural motion) of course... windvd7 got me hooked on that... anyways, for my soon to arrive PS3, and my current OTA HDTV box, im using a K-world 1440, it works great, I originally tried one of the higher res versions, but being as my PJ is a 17", I couldnt deal with the lack of aspect ratio switching on the 'higher end' model.. so I returned it for the 1440... no problems with that one at all. I know that there are a newer and older version of the 1440 and the other one, and maybe the higher res one I did not get does aspect switching, but if not its not worth it... there are plenty of easy ways to get component to VGA... im looking at the kworlds as scalers.

You are using the kworld1440 with no problem ,is it hooked up to cable or sat. , mine looked great the first night ,but the next night it started looking washed out and colors were off ,Maybe i changed the cable setup the next night to try somehting ,not sure ,but pc looked washed out also.. I still am waiting for the 1680 to come in..

Using the neoya :

xtovga.

Nice, but no picture alteration possible. I'm looking into a kworld. I want the brightness adjustment feature!

I do have to say that the neoya gives an incredible quality. VERY good.

I have run a directv box for OTA HDTV, no direct... and cable just looks like crap on anything... but ive also run a PS3 in 720p, and it looks great, letterboxes/pillarboxes as it should... not too much edge noise or anything... but I havent compared it to any other scalers, as I cant seem to get my boss to give me a faroudja... so yeah anyways its great for the price... no complaints here... oh and the speaker makes an awesome rear channel! just kidding. its ridiculous.

Well I have played with the kworld for a couple of weeks now and I have changed settings quite a bit . I have seeen that menu up more than actually watching tv. The settings that made it perfect were putting the res. to 800X600 and at 75hz, This made the pic perfectly clear and the contrast was set below 40 and brightness also .hue was at about 45. I was always trying to get into the higher res with tv but it always looked washed out and out of focus, maybe with a high def . signal you can put inot higher res. mode ,I also think if you are loooking at one of these to get one with a astc tuner so you can pull in hd , as that is what i am going to play with next... the kworld is a total thumbs up for me now and very impressed with it .just took a couple of weeks playing with settings thats all..

does your 1680's 'aspect' button work? I was wondering if one of the versions actually would letter/pillarbox... I got one and it didnt, so I returned it for the 1440. I guess it doesnt really matter, cause the 1440 does 720p, and thats as high as you need unless you have an HDCP system, or a wy around it. Just curious.

Excuse me for asking but what is the aspect button ? ,, If you mean 4;3 to 16;9 ,Yes it does work well and I use it to fit on my screen at 16;9 . IF you mean the little hd button , i don't see it doing anything as of yet. When something is broadcast in 16;9 widescreen i put it back to 4;3 to fit screen.. So you find the 1440 no problem , I think I returned mine in haste and I don't think there is much of a difference in the two ,, except the 1680 has silver on one side..

maybe you didnt return it in haste. There are two versions of both models out there... at least. I had a 1680 first (the older one, sounds like you got the newer), and traded it in for a 1440 because of the aspect ratio issue (yes the 16:9-4:3 button). That HD button, ive never seen or heard of it being functional on any of the models. They just made a future proof universal remote so they could activate stuff later if they decided to implement it, kinda like the now defunct (thank god) ugly silver Motorola cable box, that had tons of I/O's that were variously activated depending on your model. Anyways, according to Math, Kworld says they are dropping the function, so if you have one with it youre golden. Unless you like everyone fat in SDTV. These boxes are cheap... bear that in mind... but they do really well for the cost. Beware if you try to learn its remote codes... its a pain... I thought my pronto neo learned em all the first time, and then none worked. I guess it takes a while to get em right.
yappypappy
I didn't think the hd button did anything ,, so you know the code for when I lose this remote.. can you tell me what it is as I know it is just a matter of time before this happens.. thanks

well if you search the unit (kworld 1440) on remotecentral.com, you will find various codes, most are for the higher end prontos, I have a pronto Neo, and found the pronto classic hexadecimal codes on there for it, so I have to use NeoHack to and pronto2neo to convert and import the codes. I havent finished this yet, as it is tedious and I dont use the remote often, all I use it for is my PS3, and it stays on all the time. But anyways if you have an original pronto (2 hard button and touchscreen) the codes will import direct, I havent checked the other higher end remotes databases (Universal, RTI, AMX) as I havent learned how to program them yet, and cant afford the RTI T2C that I want yet smile.gif . So yeah, remote central is a good resource, they have a pretty big community of people trading learned codes so you can just import an entire remote instead of learning buttons one by one. If you were to have a high end remote, ask your dealer to look up the codes or make em for you... thats what you pay for (doubtful most on here would buy those, but just in case). My company for example does all the remote updates for our customers for life... its part of buying an insanely expensive remote.

Bottom line, if you dont already have some sort of learning remote, and arent rich, get ahold of an original pronto off ebay or something, as they have the best learning capabuilities, we still use em in the shop to learn then transfer for tough codes...
