I've been lurking around here for awhile, and now I think it is time to get a project rolling. The reason for this is that I have been able to pick up a lot of good electronics recently at my university as they tend to clean out and buy a lot of new computers as the new students enter. During lunchtime last week I suddenly stumbled on the very motherload of the electronic recycling system, a real pile of treasures hidden in a shed! I picked up a few P4 computers, even a workstation with 2 gigs of ramdac, 2 Mitsubishi Diamondcrysta 17" (mint), an Apple Cinema 20", a Roland mdx-20 CNC-machine, a UPS and some other obscure and obsolete stuff...and for this project, I found a NEC PCPJ611 projector, a real beast that must have cost a small fortune back in the days. I was almost sad to pick it apart since it was such a piece of engineering - it was really well-built and probably had some 100+ screws, must have taken some time to assemble. Anyways, I got some nice parts from it, I should be able to use the projecting optics, the fans, the reflector and possibly the ballast. So, that means I only need to get a lamp and some fresnels and I am good to go. There was also some thrown away ovearhead-projectors, so I might be able to scavenge some stuff from them as well. Anybody use a fresnel from an overhead? I am not sure about the ballast working with a MH-lamp, need to do some research on that, the NEC was rated at 340W (100V) but that is pretty much what I know about it...

Well, some info from ballast-label might be a good-start (right after correcting the spelling of 'Phenix'<g>).
Does the lens have printed-info re: FL/etc.? Pic of reflector?

Get on Ebay asap and pawn off most of that stuff (maybe Craigslist for the CRT paperweights) I think you can stuff get good money for that Rambus mem. If you can pull apart the OHP's there a a bunch of people here that would love the FS mirors/triplets/top glass/unsplit fresnels and maybe more....

Figured I would misspell Phoenix, I can only attribute it to the similarity of 'Fenix' in Swedish, which is my mothertongue...

The screens are all LCD's, I didn't even bother lugging the small mountain of CRT's as they will be impossible to sell here (Japan). I might sacrifice the DiamondCrysta RDT176S unless some 15" comes my way soon. Found a mini-itx computer today with just some ram missing, and I think I will turn this into a living-room server/musicmachine with an Onkyo PCI-90SE soundcard I bought earlier.

I have a Sanyo Z2 projector now so it will be fun to see if a diy-projector can match it. I got no data on the lens at this point, there aren't many online sources either as it is an old unit, but I'll try to work with it since it got such a nice focusing mechanism. I'll try to get some pics of the parts up tomorrow as well. The only problem now is to source the lamp, I've been looking around for it the last few weeks but I have still not found any shop that carries MH-lamps yet...I can probably order it online though, but it is always nice to have some local source if I need a replacement.

Yeah, I will have to auction some stuff off soon, my office space is a mess now. It is just that I find such cool electronics every day. Today I got some very special optical network switches that enables 64-Gb/s throughput of data, that can be used for building computer clusters. Now if I only had some optical IC's...

Pics of the optics from the NEC PCPJ611...this is actually only a selection, there are more filters and various glass panels, mirror with holders etc.

Got the mini-itx up and running with a 40 Gb 2.5" laptop hard-drive, and this makes for a really small package. It has an 800Mhz CPU so I must try to keep things simple, I think I will use a lean installation of Gentoo on it since that is the distro I am most familiar with. I will try to use an enclosure from a heavy-duty charger that I found - it is basically an aluminum heatsink into which I can fit the board, drive and hopefully PSU. I am tempted to fit an amp also, I ripped the board from a Sonic Impact, and I can feed it with a 12V rail from the computers' SMPS. However, this is a noisy source of power so that might degrade the sound, but it would make a cool musicmachine...
