Hello everyone,

I have recently replaced my cloth screen i had made from reading over in AVS Forum and found there was a new review on WilsonArt laminate and it was giving awesome results. I called my local Lowe's and i believe Home Depot carries it. You just have to give them the part number and all. I paid $80 for a special order of 60x96 and it is AWESOME!! I beilieve they even had sheets bigger then that also. Its the designer white wilsonart laminate. Here is the link to wilsonart:

I have the new screen up and i can probably get my screen back from the neighbor that i gave it to to show before and after type shots. Right now i am in the middle of rewiring my audio setup so as soon as i get that done its definately nice i ill get some shots for you.

Just saw your other part of the question. If you call your local lowe's they can tell you from the part number i put up exactly what sizes it comes in. I just have mine mounted with double sided sticky foam and it works great.

Right now i am using a commercial NEC LT240K projector. I am dying to buy or build a custom DIY projector but to be honest i have alot of IT and Audio/Video skills but my crafting skills are limited. I am scared to spend moneys on parts and not know exactly what to do. I have several posts out there looking for either builders or parts lists for a Pro lens/1080p builder or parts list. I am willing to sell my commercial PJ to build one just leary because of skill. I have been reading for years now and am incredibly impressed with what people are doing. I just love the bulb life and quality that can be produced for a really limited pricing. Even if i had the 4k to buy the 1080p projector i want i dont know if i would. smile.gif

Here are some pics of my theater in progress and a few shots of my screen. I am in the process of getting my 1080p PJ built so i will have screen shots of that after the fact.

The Designer White Laminate from WilsonArt is is very good neutral white screen material....very rugged and durable, but it is only a standard white surface. It can do nothing to improve gain or Contrast, and is best suited to Theater Room / PJ applications with totally controlled lighting and whose PJ already has excellent Contrast values.

If a comparison is to be made, it should be to a reference white screen such as the Stewart StudioTek 130.

WilsonArt has another version called Fashion Gray, but many have experienced Hot Spotting with most projectors so a Matte Poly topcoating to mute such has been the common fix used with some sucess.

I've found such a surface to be a very good substrate that is somewhat more convienent to locate and acquire, as well as less expensive than Mirror stock. But it does haul up short on versatility beyond it's use as a white screen surface unless it's used as a base for a paint solution. Even with that, it remains an excellent find, and for those with no need other than a durable white screen surface, it's about as good as it gets.

Just thought I would pop a couple of links in here to some Wilsonart "Designer White" success stories.

An early pioneer was Clarence who gave this a try with his CRT projector back in August 2006. Checkout his posts here.

More recently Dhoomdhoom reported great results over on Projector Central.

There is still ongoing investigations into different shade of gray and other manufacturers. If you are interested in the latest on laminates then click here to keep up-to-date. Or if you just want to look at some really nice screen made out of laminate take a look at the Showcase.

The designer White is a great white material that may just be the ideal surface for the DIY Projector.

Yeah I work with laminates the wilsonart designer white is D354-60 in their color chart you can obtain sheets as large as 5' X 12' they have a frosty white 1573-60 which is a little warmer and a white 1570-60 which is so white it has a blueish tinge, never thought of using laminate for a screen and I own a cabinet shop! LOL wilsonart has a 1-800 number where you can request larger samples of their laminate like 4" X 6" which they will send you free of charge in a few days which you could experiment with.
