HD means 720P-or-better...requiring a minimum of 1280X768 panel-resolution (minimum 1920X1080 for 1080i/P). This limits you to varied 17"-or-larger monitors (or one of the vga-only 15.4" 1280X800 ws-monitors) -- or a laptop-panel like the 10.6" 1280X768 ltn106w2's we use in the SmallPanel forum, or the 15.4" wuxga-panels, which also have support-threads in LL.
The downside to bigger-monitors is the limit of vga and/or vga/dvi input, and their size requiring 'pro'-or-Beseler-type triplet and larger-frez-sets. With 15.4" panels intended for laptops, the additional-downside is a rather-expensive (but multi-input) controller from outfits like Kontron, or a mis-matched/semi-functional/'cheaper'-board from RTD/Carpow.
The 10.6"/720P was my choice...inexpensive-considering, and offering most-options re: size/optics, and now an inexpensive Faroudja-enabled multi-input controller is available...
But -- all the laptop-lcd's have rather-limited color-spec's and refresh-rates (as do some of the 15.4"-ws 1280X800-monitors).
"Ya pays yer dolla, ya takes yer choice"...
