I want to build a 1080p RPTV since I don't have the room to do a projector in the room. I'm looking for ideas as where to start, should I build a folded 15.4 projector or what? Just looking at where I should start.

Im strongly considering doing a 14.1" 720p RPTV as well. Ill tell you what im doing and see if it helps im putting mine in our closet which is 30" deep. So im doing just a dead on straight shooter (lens centered in the middle of the screen straight back). If you go with a straight shooter (easiest) it would be folded but thats really not that big of a deal. Also if you need a screen call your local TV repair (ALL OF THEM!) places they throw them out anyway. Basicly mine is going to have a 60" widescreen with a 20" throw which means I need a 100mm triplet and it will be folded and centered in the middle of the screen.
EDIT: By the way a 720p RPTV is going to be MUCH cheaper than a 1080p and at 60" I dont really think you can tell that huge of a difference between the two in my opion (120" + is another story though)

You might want too look at the throw of the triplet/LCD combo first. If you run a 15.4WUXGA panel and want a large screen the triplet will need to be prithy far from the screen.
So you would want a shorter FL triplet. I have not seen many good 200mm fl triplets. If you can find one that would be cool.
A 17" wide screen LCD will give a smaler box If you use a 330mm fl triplet than a 15.4 LCD It will have lower rez but I don't think you can see it on a 60" or so screen.

The reason I say WUXGA is I don't want to build it and then be like why didn't I just build it that way in the first place. Plus I've been able to tell the difference between 720 and 1080 so it'd bug me. I'm open to all critcism though. It is also possible I could build a coffee table projector. But the room is pretty small. I'll look into any ideas anyone has.

Well I have seen a truck load of 100mm triplets on surplusshed so you would not have to have the screen that far away. I can how having 720p might bug you if you can really tell the difference between that and 1080p but my eyes arent great so i cant really tell.

What would you advice to build? It's looking like with my budget constraints a WUXGA isn't going to work out, but I want to do something reasonably soon and since I can't afford a nice LCD and what not, plus I just like to build stuff, I have enough room for 60". And I'd like to keep it under 30" deep so I don't lose a ton of room, actually the thinner the better. Also a straight shooter isn't an option, this is for my bedroom which is relatively small, but I have a futon and speakers and my laptop so I will probably have a small coffee table and I ant to be able to have some friends over and play lots of video games and watch movies.

Member "SPK" did an excellent job converting a RPTV. His plog is here.
