I am by no means an expert, but I researched enough to build my own sub and basically came to the conclusion that there are two classes of subwoofers out there (excluding all the crap psuedo subs not worth mentioning). Those that can go loud and those that can go low and loud while maintaining a relatively smooth frequency response. Unless you are willing to build your own (which shaves anywhere from a couple hundred to a couple thousand, depending on just how outrageous a sub you want to build) you have to spend $400-500 minimum to get the latter. That price continues to come down, though. Before SVS and HSU started producing affordable, quality subs it was a lot more.
Check out this guy's "twin towers" from the
DIY thread over on AVS. Is it me, or is he in dire need of a projector to balance out those ridiculous things.
