How do I get the LCD screen? From what I can see it looks like many are buying new LCD monitors for the LCD screens and scrapping the rest of the monitor. This seems like an expensive way to do it, surely you can get the separate panel without having to pull a monitor apart!!!

I'm a little wary of this option as it's a fairly expensive piece of equipment to mess up if I don't get it right.

Does this project involve getting PCB's and soldering components? I have done this with a subwoofer processor which was fairly simple, but this looks more involved.

How difficult is this stuff for those who aren't very good at electronics, or troubleshooting?

regards,
Paul

Suprisingly destroying a perfectly good LCD monitor is the cheapest way to get the LCD screens. Take a browse through google searching for LCD Panels and parts, You'll see that lcp panels w/o the rest of the plastic are not cheap at all and most times you have to buy mass quantities.

And about soldering, unless you break something off your lcd panel you won't need your iron.

Only major concern with the project is the knowledge of how not to electricute yourself which is pretty simple if you use your head.

Just took my panel apart last night. Was fairly easy. Just take your time with it. I used the Liquidvideo 15". Sometimes you can find a lcd already disassembled for a DIY projector on ebay. Buddy of mine just sold one yesterday on ebay. Benq 557s for $405. He only paid $260. Shows the price people will pay for less work. GOOD LUCK!

smile.gif Thanks guys for your response, it's very helpful. I guess this is something I should look into as I may be able to make this thing for the cost of a 68cm TV, which I was thinking of getting soon, when I get the money together.

Are you a paid member? If so, there is a list of known acceptable monitors in the members section, and a list of known incompatible monitors. As for that particular model, haven't heard much either way. How about you buy it, try to strip it, and let us know? wink.gif

Good point, yet there is one potentional downside:

...

if it doesn't work, I'm screwed (I still have parents to answer to sad.gif )

but hell, i think I'm gonna do it anyway

thanks for your reply !!

Well right on, a true pioneer! However that review Rorshach posted would make me a little hesitant...

BTW- NO parents to answer to here, but I'd still hate to eat a couple of hundred $$... You're a braver man than I...

I ate a couple hundred dollars and I'm only pissed at the fact of the time i wasted trying to get the damn NEC 1560M FFC extened. (Oh and the burns on my hands from using the soldering iron too long. When you fingers stat molding to the handle of the iron, put it down and walk away blink.gif )

found this review, (http://www4.tomshardware.com/display/20020322/lcd-06.html)
now I just hope I'm not to late, otherwise i'll have to wait much longer to buy a lcd at a reasonable price

btw. www.tomshardware.com is a good site for reviews. Although these days it's always about 17" or 19"

I hope its not permanent. unsure.gif
I dont even think its a burn, it has no blistering, looks like when you melt plastic.

Just going to have to find a smaller one biggrin.gif

Smaller soldering iron, some one should make one for sale.
