Full Version: What Do You Guys Think?
Lumenlab > LLAVS: Lumenlab AVS > Advanced Projector Builder > "Folded" designs

Hi All,

I'm about to start my second Lumenlab projector, and I guess I'm just interested in hearing feedback on my current design. I realize that this may be more appropriate to have in the PLOG, but I'm interested in hearing specifically on whether I'm going to run into problems with the whole folded projector idea. My first thought is that it should be irrelevant how close the mirror is to the triplet, due to the aperture of the light being relatively small before the focal point. This should mean that I can get away with using the 6"x9" FS mirror I had originally planned to use.

The plan is to build this projector into a Ikea shelving unit that I have laying around the house. Ideally the projector would be hidden from sight by 2 pieces of opaque tempered glass, one would open to reveal the lens assembly, the other would open to reveal the other components. The entire triplet, mirror assembly will retract back into the cabinet so that the glass would be able to cover the triplet.

Anyways, send feedback on anything. Pretty much anything you can think of will be helpful.

Looks Great. smile.gif
There have been problems with focus/ghosting using a fs mirror close to the triplet on a pro setup.
There is no explanation for this, other than the mirror not being flat enough.
Even more wierdly, the problem seems to have been fixed by using a regular rear surface mirror.

It is perfectly reasonable to assume that this setup should work, and it would be grat for you to build this design, and add to the experience of this anomaly. smile.gif

Good luck,and go for it!

Thanks for your input, your projector looks awesome btw.

That bit of info about the mirror flatness sounds crazy, I wonder if perhaps the angle they were reflecting had something to do with it. I'll see what happens and at least I know what to try when I get to that point. I actually had this idea that I would try lens shifting, but contemplating that and folded designs nearly caused my head to implode. Theoretically the same theories should apply move bulb down, triplet up, but I was getting some strange ray tracing.

I'm actually surprised there aren't more people trying folded designs. It seems the natural way to get things up high without resorting keystoning/lens shifting.

Thanks. smile.gif
I agree totally.
I think 2 or 3 people have seen the same effect when using mirrors close to the triplet using pro optics.

First let me say your design looks great and I am 1 of those 3 who had problem with the FS mirror and had to use a regular mirror which I must say gives great results , let me add my verticle pro set up is design like yours but without the shelving unit on the side, beside the rear of my PJ which is against the wall all 3 side are removable which gives me easy access to the intire set-up with your shelving unit one on side you might not have that same option.

this should be cool
keeping an eye on your plog.
