Full Version: My Simple Ohp

If there's anything I can't stand, its wasting precious bulb life on my Sharp A10x pj to watch pointless tv shows, lousy movies, or worse karaoke when the inlaws show up.

So to that end, I built a relatively easy projector for such events. I used a Samsung 15" and a Dalite portable overhead projector plus throwaway picture frame moulding and black matboard I got from work.

Total cost of the projector is $50.00.

Here are the results.

Outside use (on 165" 16:9 screen)

Note: I used a different ohp for outdoor use so the color temp might be a little different but the results are the same. The delay is adequate for movie and sports viewing.

Overall, I am happy with the picture quality. The low contrast makes video games like Halo almost unplayable in the dark scenes but bright animated movies do just fine. However, here is the problem.

There is this noticeable light arc. You can see it in the middle just right of the center. Here's another pix on the screen

The overhead projector safety glass isn't making (removing the glass didn't change it either) this so I am thinking that it is either caused by the freshnels when they interact with the panel or the metallic heat panel around the bulb is too close to the light, making this arc. Tilting the panel only moved the arc and using another overhead panel showed the same results. The opening in the panel holder design was to accomodate a fan to vent the heat in the future.

Has anyone using this design figured out what's causing it?

Update: The dalite ohp itself was dismantled. I'll probably incorporate this lcd with my beseler lens to build a much better projector- stay tuned...

5000 DA-LITE Overhead Projector
If you made a (cardboard maybe?) cover that went from the edge of the lcd up to the intake for the projector lens it would probably seem a lot brighter because it would drastically reduce light leakidge. Just a thought.

Maybe arc is light seeping into panel from edge of lcd ? Are the edges masked ?

Are you able to run the lcd and projector with no extra ventilation on the lcd panel itself?

I have already bought a 3M 2,900 lumen brightness, and am figuring on buying a 7-10 inch lcd. what will the picture quality be like?

and can you explain more indepth on how to strip the lcd carefully.

hawaii84, do you really see pictures in this thread?
I don't see any pictures, nor do I see any boxes with a red x in them.
Could you right click on one of the pictures for me and choose Properties. Then please paste the HTTP path to the picture in your reply.
