Full Version: Media Pc, Output To Television, Using Linux

My father in law's CD changer on his 1980s Pioneer rack system died. He's been using an old playstation for CDs. Sucks having to stop what you're doing every hour to change music.

I've started collecting old computer parts to build a media PC.

I plan on Linux with a gnome desktop.

The graphics card is a 6 year old NVidia with s-video and a component video out.

We need the component video out: this is going in his shop, the shelves are full and there's no room for a monitor, but there's an older 27" TV that isn't going anywhere.

I figure the rest of the hardware config in Linux (mobo, audio, ram, hd, cd/dvd, etc.) is straight-forward. I know the component video out on that AGP card works as intended under windows (both 98 and XP), how does one configure such hardware for proper use in Linux?

What about KnoppMyth? I read it has a boot option for use with a television as the monitor so you don't fry a tv. MythTV is a bit like using a fly to kill a sledgehammer (no cable or internet in the shop), but I don't want to jack up his TV.

I'm a bit of a linux noob. My only experience is with LiveCDs that I use for schoolwork. I like what I see from the open source community, both in UI and performance. I figure building this box would be a nice baptism by fire. biggrin.gif

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I think you mean composiet (the yellow end of an RCA cable) component is an HD type cable (red/green/blue ends). This is a low resolution output which should not harm the tv but it will be blurry. if the TV has s-video in i'd recommend using that over composiet (will be a little better but no where near as good as vga)

As for linux just make sure you get the right driver for your card and disto and you should be fine.

LOL, yeah, composite.

It wasn't all that blurry under win98 when I experimented with it.
