Full Version: Well I Managed To Cook My Power Supply

I came downstairs the other day and it seems my power supply cooked itself and managed to trip my breaker for that power outlet as well. I'm going through mythtv withdraw's...

I had to hook back up my xbox and download tv shows for the time being...

I now have some upgrades on the way:
Thermaltake Toughpower 750w

and
Coolermaster Liquid cooling system

The liquid cooling system is a cheap, simple way to have an external cooler for my extremely hot running intel 830 D. Seems to get good reviews. Just a cpu waterblock for the 775 chipset usually runs about $55 so this was a decent deal. I can always hook it up to my rigged water chiller (made from an old waterfountain) if I need to for extra cooling.

It appears that I should not of used a ultra-x 600 power supply to try to run a computer with a massive electicity using pentium 830 d, 8 hard drives, 3 tv tuner cards, 1 pci-e card and some usb and firewire devices heh. That 750 watt supply uses industrial grade components that can take a lot more heat and provide higher efficiency. I still don't like spending $160 for a power supply though.

finished installing the 750watt power supply and the cooling system. Definite improvement. I'll post some pictures when I get a chance. I ran the water cooling system into the next room. Keeps my processor around 100 degrees F even under load. Much better than before and I had one of those huge ninja air coolers

That is smart. People often skimp on the PSU and wonder why they get BSOD or instability, or a PSU that craps out after a year or two. I spent almost $200 on a PC Power and Cooling 510Watt PSU 3 years ago. At the time, was the best PSU I could buy. It still has 2 years warranty left on it and has withstood massive amounts of overclocking with no sweat blink.gif

I just had my Power supply, Motherboard possibly the dual video cards and the APC 1500VA backup battery fry. I am still trying to find out why this happened and it has been 3 weeks since it died. APC is willing to pay for everything. All I know is that it does not work. I am just going to send it back to Cyberpower.

sounds like a short. First thing I'd check is to make sure your mother board is grounded correctly and it's not touching your case that is usually what causes that or a lightning strike/massive power surge, also a power supply that dies can do that

Meh, I think the power supply fried taking the battery and the rest of the PC with it. I am currently dealing with it with APC. The rest of my APC batteries are fine so I dont think it was anything on the lines itself.

you will need to insulate your socket if using chilled water.......
you probably already know that tho. I had a pelt setup a few years back, was awesome. without insulation I'd have frost in 30 seconds!

IMO PCP&C, OCZ, Tagan, Zippy, Fortron FSP, Enermax, Antec are some of the better/best PSU brands.

Sorry to hear that the PSU fried the rest of the PC, that really sux. Hope you get refunded for all that stuff

MY PC IS COMING BACK TO LIFE. Sorry, I was happy. tongue.gif Since my PC was plugged into an APC backup battery, they are paying for everything. I talked to them and they have approved the claim and I am getting money for a new PC. I wonder what I will do with the old one. blink.gif Maby a wheel chock biggrin.gif

P.S. Get a backup battery. I swear by these things. Great if you live in an area with storms.
