What would be the best way to connect my Playstation 3 (HDMI output) to a standard monitor (VGA? input)? I don't want to sacrifice any video quality and I'm wondering if there's just a HDMI to VGA converter cable. Thanks in advance!

Hmmm... I haven't personally heard of such a thing, however...

HDMI is essentially DVI plus audio. I know that there are DVI breakout cables for HDMI. I also know that there are converters for DVI to VGA. It therefore stands to reason that such a thing is possible.

However, such a conversion is highly unlikely to handle HDCP. In fact, I'd almost guarantee that it will not. As such, I don't think you'd be able to play bluray disks -- at least not in high definition.

Thanks for the response. My first thought was to use a monitor with DVI input. However, I want to use a 15.4 monitor that only has VGA input. I can also use component ypbpr outs from the PS3 to transfer hi def- is there a way to go from component to VGA? I want to use a 1280x800 monitor, so I figure I really only need to be able to send 720p from the PS3 to the monitor.

Ok, after checking out monoprice, I think I could go the component video out route. They have a component to vga cable:

I could use a female/female ypbpr coupler to connect my PS3 component outs to the component to vga cable. Think this would work without degrading the signal?

Yes it might work , but only if the Lcd supports SOG (Sync On Green). If it doesn't then the VGA-to-Component cable won't work.
SupraGuy
Well, there are component to VGA adapters which separate out the synch signal from the green line, and make it work that way. I would try the simple component->VGA andd see if it works first.

Hum....

One thing that not everyone knowes is that there are 3 different types of DVI. Digital, analogue and one that dose both. I am not sure, but I think that HDMI is digital only and since the VGA is analogue only you do not have any easy way of converting between them.

What I am trying to say is that you won’t find an easy/cheap adapter/converter but would have to have a more expensive box to do this.

There are so many different things and ways of solving things. There could be an easy adapter, but I really doubt it. If I am wrong I am sure someone else will shout it loudly ;-)

Thanks Firebird and Supraguy.

Firebird, you spoke of the HDMI output being digital and VGA as analog. What if I were to use the component ouputs on the PS3? Is the Ypbpr signal digital as well?

No it's analog.

Sweet, I'll have to cross my fingers and try a component to vga adapter. Thanks.
