But will it work?

The only specs they post:

"These are brand new projection lenses that were made surplus to us from one of the top large screen TV manufacturers. The overall size of the top optical part of the lens is about 3 1/2" Dia., however the plastic base holder assembly is over 5" in Dia. and about 2 1/2" high. Very good optical quality. Prime!
G1596"

No info on focal length.

Well, you'll need to find it. And the lenses field of view. Let us know that and the size of the LCD you are going to use and we can say if its good or not.

For $8 I might just go ahead and buy it to experiment. Is there a way to determine focal length for a triplet? I believe I read that with a fresnel you can hold it in the sun and measure the distance from the ground when the sunlight is a tight point. Will that work with a triplet, too?

I am planning to use a 14" LCD that I have on hand, now, but I would like to use a smaller LCD (10") later, once I am able to spend the money.

Sounds good. Just thinking about it I'd be guessing it's out of a rear projection tv perhaps? that might limit you to a small screen. No harm in trying for 8$

Indeed, the FL is about 2"/ 50mm. It's a shame because it is a beautiful lens. Just for kicks I used it to project my PDA screen onto a blank wall. Only the center was in focus. My screen size would have to be about 1/2" square to use this thing! Maybe I'll find another use for it. . .
