alright im fixing to start a new build

, i can feel the excitement......time for #2. you know it is simply astonishing just how engulfing these projectors can be, and just how much you learn on your first builb...the do's and the dont's......on that note.....the materials
i plan on doing a vertical enclosure because my HT is getting a very intense overhaul
14.1" samsung sxga panel & control board bought off ebay, both still on the way
LL 400w bulb & huge coil ballast
ikea reflector thingie
standard lenses(frezzies and triplet)
fans, wires, mess, and so onnnnnnnnnn....
i plan on detailing this build quite intinsively, since i haven't done so in the past please bare with me, i will probably start the build in the next few weekends, maybe not because i am about to get married in march, but whatever time i get i promise lots of pictures and such
i could not resist the urge to go ahead and post this, i just got a new plunge router and i am pumped(does that sound kind of 80's?), sorry to get off subject, but hopefully i can supply everyone with a little entertainment
hope to update soon

here we go with update #1, finally got my panel in.......the controller came today too, but since no one was here to sign for it i will have to wait until tomorrow to pick it up...but here is the panel(pictures taken with my cell phone so they are rather fuzzy)

heres the model # and the beautiful letters SXGA

and one more showing no ffc's to extend(bonus points)

i will pick up the controller board tomorrow and put some pics up of this thing in action!! hopefully everthing will go as planned

alright stripped the monitor down....only four screws, finally got to test the controller(sort of) and ended up with this

and with the 360 via vga cable at 1280*1024

here is a pic of the controller

i have started on the box, but hopefully i can finish it up in the next week or so, but i dont want to rush anything....... more pics to come of AG removal....hopefully tonight

here we go on another AG removal.......going to try the water soak first...from what i have heard the water soak seems to work well on samsung panels......here goes nothing!!
plain dry shop towel(seem to hold plent of water and they dont dry out fast)

here it is wet with tap water......never had problems in the past using tap water

and finally some plastic wrap to retard evaporation

i will check back in about 4 or 5 hours and see what happens!
edit: i did push the rest of the air bubbles out after i put the plastic on

Please tell us a little more about the controler. It has all the inputs , can it drive alot of different panels? Cost?
I was looking at a bunch of laptops the other day and all of the screens look like they might be better than a 17" LCD if we can find a good cheep controler for them.
BIMPtacular
Feb 8 2007, 05:19 PM
the controller was bought from ebay...
here...shipped from hong kong....$80 shipped, and has vga,s-video-rca-and built in tv tuner......all with remote control........like i said i have not really had time to truly test it, but it seems to be compatible with almost every make of lvds lcd......mine was not on the list of supported panels...but i have tested it to make sure it works, and it does flawlessly and supports up to 1280*1024 ....sxga, duh to myself
i just emailed the guy to see if we could get some type of group buy if anyone is interested

Thanks
So your panel is 1600x1200?
Do you know the contrast of the 14" Samsung LCD?
Was it cheep?
I see a lot of the Dell 15.4" panels, is the Samsung a better LCD?
I really like that setup.
Nice job.
BIMPtacular
Feb 8 2007, 11:20 PM
the panely supports 1440*1050 natively....if anyone would like to help me find the contrast ratio i would sure appreciate it, because i cant find it........i got it for 50 US dollars shipped....so all together i got my lcd and controller for..................$130 shipped, tada........nice price for a 14.1 sxga setup, i would say
as far as the panels go, im not sure which one is better....but i got mine pretty cheap because it was scuffed from the keboard....but when i stripped the AG the scuffs were on the it and not on the polars, you can find most of the panels on ebay for about $50-75 shipped

Hey BIMP! Nice job! That enclosure sure looks nice

It isnt HUGE like some other ones i have seen lately.
Cant wait until you finish, it wont take long at the rate your going!
so, what is the basic layout going to be in that box? is the curved side the top? or will it be a vertical PJ with a mirror? Also, what light source do you intend to use?
Nice work!

Hey Bimp!
Nice progress! While anticipating your finish (as i have nothing better to do..haha), i have been boring myself to death learning the basic cellular technology of the 80's. All while chatting with the Verizon computer by dialing 611 on an old Panasonic EB-1118 of my step dads i found in the garage....

Amazingly,

it has a better voice quality and gets better signal than my LG VX8100. too bad verizon wont activate it....
ok, off topic.. lol
Cant wait for your finish! I keep putting off ordering that controller, just cuz i am lazy...lol.
what is the real difference between a FS Mirror and a non-FS mirror?

well a little progress report...i did finish most of the box today, and got up a test image...but due to its horrible nature(quality) i will not be showing it tonight.......i have to make a LOT of adjustments, but it is my first horizontal and to be honest i just feel drained right now......so my progress has been put off until tomorrow night....but dont worry i have not given up by any means....just have many improvements to make.....i think most of it is just bulb placement, and i need to remount my triplet......and i dont have my lcd mounted yet......but that will be the absolute last thing that i do, surely more pics tomorrow night....hopefully some worth showing
the only thing that i can notice with the regular mirror vs the FS mirror is that the image is doubled slightly due to the image reflecting off the glass and the reflective surface behind the glass........oh well, it really is not bad enough to notice unless your looking for it.....but more to come tomorrow, so to you i say good day

...........ahhhhh what the hey, ill show you guys anyway
dont laugh too hard....im working on it

now that that is out of the way......look forward to something worth seeing tomorrow

Hey Bimp,
It's looking good, I really like the spaulded look of your wooden box. We have a maple over here in CA. that gets the same look as that wood.
I have a few questions The panel you bought is it a laptop panel? And if it is, does the controller you have connect directly into it ? And does the controller come with a power supply or do you have to get one from some where else. I have been looking on ebay for some laptop panels and I took a peek at the hong kong web site. But before I get stuff I thought I would ask you about your setup.
Sorry for the spelling I'll blame it on the splinter I got in my typing finger.

yes it is a laptop panel..........samsung model #LTN141P2-L01
the controller i got off ebay, and it came from hong kong.......has its own power supply and just plugs into the panel......oh, and it has a remote also supports 1280*1024.....and the panel is sxga so i will be able to get the boards full supported resolution natively!

Thanks Bimp,
I ordered one today, I already have a old matsushita 12.1. It only has 800X600 res but that will be okay for my taste. I will only be projecting 7ft When I ordered it He wanted to know what type of panel I would be using it with. Does that mean that he will be installing firmware and will only be able to use it with that brand of panel or will I be able to test it with other ones. questions questions I got a email from him within and hour that was fast considering that it is ebay and he is in hong kong.
Well guess I'll have to get fresnels now. I'm almost ready to start my own plog

the reason he asks what panel it its is so he can send the right type of cable with it to connect to the controller. but i guess that doesnt mean that you cant try other panels. not sure though, you could probably email him and ask what panels that cable will work with.
