Full Version: Using The Pc's Video Card To Control The Lcd And The Ps2 To Provide The Rgb

Hey guys, i just had a strange idea.

I have a cable that connects to my ps2 and outputs component but in the output options of my ps2, i can choose either RGB or some other one.

I have a spare VGA extension. Can I cut the RGB wires that come from the video card and and connect the RGB from the PS2 and allow the computer to control everything else ? ALso, i could buy one of those RCA switch boxes so i can switch between my pc and the ps2.

I dont mind leaving the pc on because its on 24/7 anyways.

Only if your monitor supports Sync On Green. Your VGA cable normally carries the horizontal and vertical synchronisation pulses on the HSYNC and VSYNC lines. With RGB component video a composite sync is carried along with the green signal, hence Sync On Green (with component YPrPb the sync is carried with the luminance signal, Y).
If your monitor doesn't support Sync On Green, then you'll need a device to remove the synchronisation pulses from the green channel and separate them into horizontal and vertical pulses.

Furthermore, you'll only be able to view PS2 games that support progressive scan. Very few non-old-high-end-CRT monitors can display interlaced video (what the PS2 usually puts out) so you'll only be able to play progressive scan games. You would then need something like the Xploder HDTV Player to force games into prog scan mode if they don't have it built in (doesn't work with all games unfortunately).


A much easier option would be to get a converter box such as the N6 or similar which can convert 480i to VGA.

But wouldnt the video card from the pc provide me with that extra stuff ? (sync, sync on green)

I know that i can just buy one of those boxes, I just like experimenting with stuff biggrin.gif

Im curious what will happen now so i will try it on an old 15" crt. If it blows up who cares tongue.gif

Gemini, are you talking about hooking the outputs of the video card and the PS2 together and then running the combined cable to the monitor?

If that's the case, save yourself some money and grief and don't do it. Hooking outputs together is an extremely poor idea, and will only cause the magical smoke to come out of one or t'other or both of your sources. Maybe the monitor too, if you're really unfortunate. That's what I think the N6 is for, although I don't know what the N6 is for sure, so I can't say.

Or am I misreading what you intend?

OK, good. Glad I was NOT understanding correctly in this case.

No dice. The entire point of the synchronisation signals is for them to be synchronised with the video you're trying to display. If you managed to hook up your PC & PS2 in your proposed setup without frying anything, all you'd see would be garbage.
