Wow did a search for rear projection related stuff and couldnt find mych info on this so far biggrin.gif

Was just wondering what progress has been made on different materials for rear projection screens. The idea haunts me more and more lol as I believe this would be the best solution for those who have ambient lighting (assuming everything is enclosed).

Kept thinking of all different ideas such as making use of a basement directly below where you would want the DIY "RPTV" to be and cutting a hole in the floor for the triplet to peek through and shine on to a mirror, reflecting to a screen. Just build an enclosure for the mirror and screen and slide it over the hole, so to speak.

I know some pull down shades are capable of seeing the image on the otherside, but think that this would not let enough light and image through to have a bright image in ambient light....

What about large sheets of plexi dusted with a very thin layer of special paint... enough to catch the image on, but allow light to pass for a brighter image...

Anyway Ideas and etc would be great

I wonder how much of an angle we could put the mirror at in order to create a thinner cabinet... Imagine a DIY 100" RPTV biggrin.gif You could even make a cool logo to put on it as a joke with your Nick name or somehting rofl so when people go to see what brand it is they will be all puzzled lol

Reading through one plog here that gutted a RPTV he found little to no problems with the projected image when using a regular mirror. I have found at various consignment shops, Goodwill, and Habitat for Humanity Re-Store shops that large mirrors can be had reletively inexpensive... I thnk I seen one that was about 6' wide and I think 4' high for $50 although there was slight damage to the mirror in small areas.... (I almost jumed on it to try a light fusion screen, but it was an odd size, I dont have a 16x9 image most of the time, and dont have a spray gun for the paint)

Anyway... just starting up some ideas and etc to see what others have thought of and maybe go from there biggrin.gif
TESCORP
have you seen SPK's plog?

also try this link: http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?s...5&hl=rosco# , member lesavoir has done one ...roscoe makes rear projection material for stage productions..... mostly it seems drafting film can be used (like mylar with a translucent finish) ....

TESCORP: yes his was the first I had seen, where he gutted his old RPTV. I was just curious to see what others had done if other had... It would be wild to see a larger screen version biggrin.gif

mikyd1954: the 55" wide material in that thread has caught my interest but I'll have to read more on it. That could provide up to a 112" 16:9 screen biggrin.gif thats more like what I was looking for biggrin.gif I think though the cabinet depth would be a problem though lol if the mirror had to be kept at a 45 degree angle, then of course finding a mirror that big cheap biggrin.gif

I have a 55" HDTV set in my front room right now that is about 5 or 6 years old now, and have been wanting to put the projector in that room, but because of the horribly bad room layout and the amount of day light in that room I dont think my PJ would be best suited.... but if my TV goes out I honestly cant say I would want to buy another I would prob reather just build a DIY RPTV or find a way to make a projector work in that room lol. But I would love to have bigger than 55" so I wouldnt nessecarily want to gut it... but at the same time.... if it is dead I am not going to throw it out and if I do make another projector it would be with a higher resolution screen and that means I would have a bunch of older stuff laying around lol....

For a Front-Side mirror that large, you might be better off (cheaper) just buying a large house mirror and attempting to strip the back down to the silver.

thats the plan smile.gif

although some have said they use a regular house mirror and havent had too many problems thats they can see (ghosting and etc)

all this is just thought process and planning for future use, more so for when my RPTV dies lol. I hope to start experimenting in the next few months.

Since I plan on dabbling first with the 150W or higher ceramic bulb setup for better contrast, and getting new fresnels I will have lots of parts laying around. I have been thinking about jumping all in and building a pro setup with a WS monitor instead of my 4:3 monitor. at that point my plan of getting a Black fusion screen would make more sense. But I figure workign on the light engine first would be the best since I can reuse that or continue to use it if I decide to keep my current setup.
