After I finished my projector and watched a few movies, I decided that it is now time to build my seating.

Right now, the projector is setup in my garage. This works well in the current house; however, it will soon be time to move into a larger place. With this, I am going to build (1) theatre / modern style recliner seat as a test prototype. The chair that I have chosen is around $800 if purchased through a store such as Macy's. NOT-ME! I am going to DIY this chair if nothing else; just to see if I can do it!

Below is a rough sketch of the design and will change as I build (Always Does!).

I will be using a combination of Oak, Maple, and Aspen to build the frame. I found Faux Leather for roughly $8.00 per square yard. I figure this project will take me between 6 and 8 square yards.

The only tricky process is going to be the recline mechanism. If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to post. Some friends mentioned using the gut's out of a trashed recliner but I think that this will just degrade the quality of the overall build.

The wood I am using will be the expensive material. I figure I need a good strong solid frame.

Wood Cost - $250.00 - Using Oak, Maple, and Aspen
Faux Leather Cost - $60.00
Misc. Foam - $50.00
Pillow Top Material - $25.00

Total Build Roughly - $385.00

I have a chair very similar to the one in your photograph. Super comfy.

If you manage to do this for under $400, let us all know how. I would love a couple more of these puppies. biggrin.gif

The small foam chair is a scaled down version. I did this to get my measurments correct before cutting $250 of expensive wood. I am cautious like that!!!

Just got back from Lowe's. Here is the wood I am going to use.

Originally, I wanted to use a combo of Oak, Maple, and Aspen. It looks like I am using Red Oak.

(12) 1X3X6 - $8.38
(2) 1X4X6 - $11.33
(1) 1X6X6 - $17.06
(3) 1X8X6 - $22.65

Total: $208.23
Tax: 17.18
Grand Total: $225.41

I still have to purchase the Leather and stuffing material.

If you can find a lumber yard instead of using Lowes or HD you will be able to cut your lumber price by at least 4x. You will be able to find a larger assortment of wood types also.
The only drawback is you will need to rip your boards to the correct width.
orangelmo
Wouldn't you also have to get them surfaced planed if you went that route as well?
MrBill
It depends. Where I get my lumber, it is already planed. Only one edge is square, the other is rough. This gives you a nice straight edge to run through the table saw. There will, however, be some waste. I just built a pool table using walnut for the rails, jatoba for the sides, and red oak for the cabinet. All of the subframe is 3" thick poplar. Of all the wood I used, none of it needed to be surface planed. There was some chatter toward the end of one of the oak boards but it was a cut off piece.
FriscoKid
Wood from a few local lumber yards was roughly the same cost. I guess I went to Lowe's for the convenience.

They do not sell a 3"X3" post needed for the legs so I glued (3) 3" peices togehter. Should work...right???

MrBill
That will work just fine. You'll need to plane the sides a bit but, if you aligned things good, not very much. Get yourself a few more clamps. You can never have too many. I would have had about six more on there. If you have a Harbor Freight around there, they usually have good deals on clamps.

Anymore progress on these seats??
ToddtheUberGamer
ya, how the seats goin?
jonvall
Well he hasn't logged on since Jan. 9'th so it would seem like we're not going to receive any updates.

Maybe the seats are sooooo comfortable that he doesn't feel like getting up???
