OK - here's what has been built so far. I don't expect this thing to be finished until sometime in September though
As you can see - it's the 'Military Theme' design. The ballast will eventually reside in another box that will set under the main enclosure (see schematic)

Do you mind telling me what kind of wood is that you used ? How do you intend to finish it ? Paint or Stain ? The reason I'm asking is that I was contemplating using Ash and stained black to match my speaker cabinets. The grain of that wood you are using is near as damn it to Ash, so far as I can tell from the photos. Thanks.

I love it! This will be a showcase projector. You will have as many people in awe by its design as its results. Keep up the good work.

It's 3/4 ply that had a nicer finish on one side. I need to sand it a bunch more, add more filler, sand some more, then I will seal it and paint it. The corners will have a very slight rounded edge too.

Beautiful looking box, that's gonna be cool. I see you are using Bondo® as a wood filler; that works great, way better than wood putty.
Just one question though; How are you gonna get the stuff in your box? I guess you have or will have a door somewhere?

It's all glued and screwed right now. After I have finished sanding it smooth as a babies bottom, I will cut a lid in the top and drop in my components.

Really like your design !
This seems to solve a concern of mine (that I've yet to seem mentioned) of a simple but effective veritcal adjustment via the front 'pod leg'.
Is the overall enclosure smaller and lighter as a result?
Thanks...

I don't have a frame of reference as this is my first enclosure. It's probably negligible at the moment however, but will end up heavier with the addition of the base and lower ballast box. I think that it 'looks' smaller compared to a purely rectangular box, but that is mostly an optical illusion. An easier weight saving measure would be to use 1/2" wood in place of the 3/4" ply.

Hey Rorshach,
Your pj looks professional. Just like the oldest commercial 3 crts projector. Not a like coffin as some ones are saying J.
Did you ever think using the ceiling mount? You could put the ballast box and cables running above the ceiling. I think your design is perfect for it.

I did, but couldn't convince the wife to let me do it.
So I compromised with sticking it on a cart.
Update: I've ordered a monitor to disect. Still need to order my tempered glass - almost there!

Quick update: Military projector project isn't dead - just waiting on a part. Bought a used lcd monitor on ebay that has a burned out backlight. Seller took almost 30 days before shipping, even though I paid electronically within 5 minutes after close of auction. Monitor arrived intact eventually, but missing the power cord. Not knowing if the cord had a transformer built into it or not, I emailed the seller back. It has been three weeks since, and still no power cord. This guy must not want a positive feedback rating from me!

Viewsonic VPA 150 - I'm not even certain it's compatible with this project, but hey, it was cheap. Unfortunately, it was advertised as 24 bit, even the online reviews said it was 24 bit. Viewsonic's website wouldn't let me download their guide without the serial number either. Turns out the monitor is 262,000 colors so it's gonna look bad enlarged. But hey, it's a proof of concept - I'll upgrade to a better panel later.

Mod - would you move this to the PLOG section? I plan to add some internal pix soon.
Thanks - R
