It pays to shop around. I went to the local hardware store and got quoted $46.00 for two sheets(1200mm x 900mm x 18mm) MDF and then a cabinet maker was going to charge me $20.00 to cut all of it to size total would have been $66.00. They did not stock 18mm MDF.
I stopped at one other cabinet maker's and he said he would supply the MDF and cut it for a total of $30.00>>>>>>Less than i could get the timber.

precision cut on a computerised table saw .

test clamp to check timber before marking for holes, centre for lenses etc.

Hey Swiftden, do you still have the receipt for the monitor? if you do. You should go through tigerdirect.com. I got my Benq 567s V2 from there brand new for only 350. I tried going through benqshopper to get a refurbished one and they were on backorder forever. So I just decided to spend $50 more to get a brand new one from tigerdirect.com. Just thought I would let you know if you are interested.

Shipping to Australia is expensive, and they don't use the cheaper carriers. I cancelled an order for a refirb N4 because of that.
swiftden
Aug 13 2004, 12:45 AM
yeah your right scottk besides the fact that shipping is expensive it would cost me a fortune to send it back if it arrived damaged. getting it local might cost a bit more to start with but i ensured i got a great monitor delivered just down the road with no dead pixels and in one piece. I also did get it . you just never know when you order from another country

rear view. As you can see i still have to fill in the screw holes but im not doing that yet as i want t ofit everything first then pull it all apart and tidy up the box before painting. I want it to look good.

I had to get the electric planer on the focus box and reduce it alittle so that it slide nice.

Nice box Swiftden!
How did you join the MDF parts?
swiftden
Aug 13 2004, 12:49 PM
i used 50mm coarse thread chip board screws. first i predrilled then counter sunk the holes then screwed it together. Once i have all the bits in and it works i will strip it again and glue all the panels together then re-screw them and finally paint it inside and out

Nice box, what are you using to get such perfect cuts, especially the front portion for your focusing mechanism?

i have yet to glue it together just in case i need to pull it apart . But i will glue it using PVA wood joinery glue. As for the front hole i cut it out with a jig saw leaving the very corners which i sanded out round with the dremel tool and a cylinder sander disk. i have the following tools which i can use :_ router, jigsaw, circular saw, electric planer, drill, dremel, belt sander, palm sander, table saw. i love wood work and enjoy working with it.
i haven't done much since as i am on night shift at the moment.

i would like to extend the VGA for the lcd down the inside of the box into the rear half and put the socket at the back so it is neat along with the power socket(computer lead and plug). if i sheild these with flashing will the heat effect them also will the power lead cause interference with the VGA???
see picture. sorry to use such an excellent diagram like this but i needed to get my thought across. thanks for these plans they are really helping. red = vga (and controller card for lcd). yellow = power, blue is the lcd buttons on outside..
All cablse will pass past lenses glass and lcd right in the bottom coner of box ??

What have you heard about the evercool fans. Are they better than the 120mm fans that some people are using?

i will let you know once i have installed them but from what i have read they shift a large volume of air and are very quiet. you can also adjust their speed.
