I' m building a projector using a 1600sw lcd from SGI, has anyone used this lcd?
brainchild
Yes cruser has used several.
poorboy
What is cruser?
KingOfSwords
I read Cruser's descriptions of this panel and I'm in on his group buy. 1600x1024 sounds really good to me. Be warned, this is not an inexpensive option due to the fact that the monitor needs a special adapter or graphics card to be able to hook it up to a non-SGI computer. However the group buy panels will come with the required adapter.
mark8261
Cruser is a who not a what.
jaydillyo
Could someone please direct me to informatino about the group buy on the SGI 1600SWs.

I might want 2 of them.

Hop on the chat and talk to Cruser.

hi poorboy,

i started building a projector using the sgi 1600sw. it is a killer monitor.
i posted some quick pictures on diyaudio.com

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=37611

of course you should contact cruser, he built one a while back. i would think lumenlab's
new 4" projection lens and fresnels would be perfect for this monitor.

all the best, tony
KingOfSwords
Tony...I got my lenses in last week. Thanks!

Do you have any current pictures of your final setup of this projector?
brainchild
Hey Tony, nice to see you around. I told them not to close your thread over there...buggers.
tony
Thanks Brian..i appreciated that jesture very much on my behalf. The air is so much more
calm and friendly here smile.gif

KingOS
no final pics yet, it was just a wood shelf holding the projection lens and
duct tape and cardboard for the fs mirror. not something i want to show
in that shape. just tore down the rig. it was smack dab in the middle of
the living room, and wife says OUT for our daughter's 3rd birthday this
weekend. this projector is very short throw being a 17" lcd.

beautiful monitor, strips well, no fcc troubles. ultra high dpi, and at 1600
pixels wide, screen door is very very very fine and faint.

Are you planning on going with the new 4" LL optics when you rebuild?
tony
well, it would solve a bunch of problems all at once using the
new 4" lens and long focal fresnel lenses.

the 4" clear diameter is very important, very fast lens, but it
also will allow more advanced projection lens offsets, that can't
be done with smaller lenses.

longer focal lengths are great. i'm running a little under 1:1, maybe
7' distance for a 8' wide screen, etc. makes it hard not to have the projector
in your face.

i have a bunch of stuff i have already purchased, zeiss and nikon lenses,
copy lenses, projection lenses, etc, shorter fresnels from alan and cruser.
so i'm detremined to use some of what i have first. that being said, if brains
lenses turn out nice, i think folks should run, not walk and get them. i can't
see any alternatives out there for the diy crowds. i'm planning
to build one to two more of these. one will be for rear projection
short throw, the other maybe front projection zero keystone for use behind
a wall, like in a theatre. i may need brians lenses for this one. first things first,
i need to see how much i like the sgi. so far thumbs up!

all the best tony.
tony
here is a picture of the lamp used on my sgi projector.
ushio 400w metal halide hps conversion lamp. magnetic
ballast. go electronic, this thing is large and hot, belongs
in my garage shop.
KingOfSwords
Thanks for the input Tony. I have to save my pennies right now...If I had known a little sooner that the new 4" lenses were becoming a reality, I would have joined the buy. As it is, I'm going to have to satisfy myself with the 342mm lens I grabbed from you last week.

Oh, btw, do you happen to know the dimentions of the stripped panel?
tony
yep, saving pennies is right. but hey it's a hobby. what is nice is you can just use what you
have right now, and upgrade and change your design later. be thankful you didn't have to
spend $100 for each fresnel, like i did half a year ago. now you can get large ones for only
25 bucks. panel size off the top of my head is about 16x12", active area is maybe 14.5x9.5. the bloody thing is asymetric, off center in its frame. takes longer to make a template.

poorboy
Well, nice to see other are using the same lcd as me.

Can someone tell me more about the 4" lens, and how much it is?
brainchild
For the 4" lens read the description in the store.

KingOfSwords
Come on, those are brand new...no one has them yet.

Those won't ship until September, so only brain has access to them for now. (Assuming he has samples)

The new lenses will work fine wih the SGI 1600SW. While you can use the combo you mentioned for 15" panels... it's really a waste. They should be used for 17-19" panels.

I wouldnt say its a waste. You can find better specs in some of the larger lcd's, but there is no reason not to use the new lens set with a 15" lcd. If you already have a good 15" lcd and want to project a smaller image from further back then I would go with the new lens set. Brain got the larger fresnels so it is possible to go to a larger lcd then 15". For those who have just come into the forum, or havent started buying parts yet, these new lens should make for alot of good options.
brainchild
I'm using mine for the 15". I need the long throw and the brightness gain is well worth it. Since I just moved the zoom came in very handy. I was able to make the picture size exactly what I needed and put the projector exactly where I wanted it to go.

In theory could I go buy a new monitor off a shelf at walmart, bring it home, strip it down and use it as my lcd..... I might sound like an idiot, but there's alot of information flying and I just want a straight answer.... aside from the ffc garbage is this not the basic concept....

Thanks for taking the time to help out a TOTAL newbie

Brain:

While the LL plans call for a Norpro reflector, would you regard the condenser used by Tony Dean to be a suitable substitute ? I personally prefer the compactness and ease of installation of the condenser. Does the Norpro have it over the condenser or do they each have their own pros and cons ?

Exactly, although you might want to shop around online first. You'll generally find a better price. Check the compatible monitors list in the forums and look for high contrast ratio with low response time.

To use a condenser you need a reflector as well. Apples and oranges. To properly use a reflector and condenser the lamp must be fitted in between. With a large lamp this is currently impractical.

may have been covered,

which fresnels are suitable for this lcd monitor?
mark8261
The pro lens kit is the only one large enough for a 17" widescreen lcd.
clamps
The Store page says that the Pro kit is good for monitors up to 19". I have a 20" I'd like to use. Is it an option? Or do I have to buy another monitor?
btw, mine is the Dell 20" 2001FP
hmm...
thanks.
