BBspot reports that the MPAA is lobbying Congress to push through a new bill that would make unauthorized home theaters illegal. Apparently, the group feels that all theaters should be sanctioned, whether they be commercial or the one in your home.

"Just because you buy a DVD to watch at home doesn't give you the right to invite friends over to watch it too. That's a violation of copyright and denies us the revenue that would be generated from DVD sales to your friends," said the MPAA's chief attack dog, Dan Glickman. "Ideally we expect each viewer to have their own copy of the DVD, but we realize that isn't always feasible. The registration fee is a fair compromise.

"We didn't act early enough with the online sharing of our copyrighted content. This time we're not making the same mistake. We have a right to know what's showing in a theater," he continued.

The MPAA defines a home theater as any home with a television larger than 29-inch with stereo sound and at least two comfortable chairs, couch, or futon. Anyone with a home theater would need to pay a $50 registration fee with the MPAA or face fines up to $500,000 per movie shown.

* This post tested positive for Sarcasm.

oh great now we're going to see automobile manufactures charging a per passenger fee..

"this new SUV comes with a one passenger licence (even though it seats 8). you'll have to pay $50 per additional passenger or face a $500,000 fine"

* This post also tested positive for Sarcasm. tongue.gif

especially large modified SUV's with 24" plasmas need to apply for the $200 public viewing tax since everyone along driving on the highway can watch the movie that's playing on the screen.

Hoaxes arent funny unless there is a small kernel of truth to them...

The sad part is that is WASNT immediately apparent it was a sill hoax. Just as it took some folks some time to sort it out, the same confusion could be used to whisk it by congress, the house etc. buried in the depths of some obscure inane bill about media tax...
This government doesnt function the way its supposed to. What makes you think common sense has any chance against the almighty dollar? wink.gif

admit it, just for a second, you thought "wow, could they do that?"...

I think that sony/samsung/lg/toshiba/pioneer//harmonkardon/denon etc. Might have a little something to say about this... ie in the form of "RIAA are you smoking crack?!?" This would effectively kill tv sales or rather tvs above the 29in standard they wish to enforce as well as kill sales of surround sound systems/speakers and of course DVD's
This just proves the old adage "give them an inch and they'll take a mile

I gave up on copyright protection and sent a letter to the MPAA.
I had them send us a representative. We keep him the garage mostly.
Every once in while I pop my head in, flash him a DVD and say "Hey, is it okay if we play this?" He asks if its mine. Possesion being 9/10 of the law, Im 90 percent certain it is. "Sure." I say and go back into the house...
I think he is bored with his job.
Last couple of times he hasnt even moved, so now I ask him "Hey! We are going to play this DVD, Any objections?....No?...Okay, then."

See? Having the MPAA on your shoulder isnt too bad, as long as its winter anyway...

OP, can you cite your sources please?

EDIT: Oh thank god, the story is not real, because all of us here at LL would be facing some huge fines. tongue.gif However, this kinda crap being true wouldn't even surprise me with all the DRM and HDCP bull**** these days.
