So after about a week of lurking I was hooked. Pun15er's projector really struck me, so I will be trying to accomplish something close to that. I'm not sure on most things yet though. I saw a good deal in the trading post and bought that stuff before I probably would have otherwise. Anyway, here I am. I'm not trying to make any dents or do anything new, yet at least. While I was waiting for all my stuff, I mocked everything up to show my wife.

To start off the shopping spree I bought a 17" LG 1780Q on Ebay.

I also ordered a slew of cables to accommodate my setup. I'm getting a V-digi, a component switch box, and component cables for my consoles. Holy crap the gamecube component cable is expensive. Thanks to ChrismasGT, I got a GCN component cable cheap. I guess we will see once I have everything setup if I will ever need a scaler, but I'm going to try to avoid that expense.

Later in the day I bought the stuff from justin.langley's old projector. So now I will have 2 LCDs. If I'm careful I may just end up with 2 projectors. smile.gif

So I got all the necessary parts yesterday to start building this mother. I'll stop by Home Depot and pick up some stuff to try to make a light-box and a way to secure my LCD. Can anyone tell me what thread bolts I need to get for my mogul mount? I don't feel like going home first just to get that. Anyway, my wife works tonight so I have the night to myself to play. Hopefully my hands are a little less shaky with excitement tonight.

Also I am open to suggestions for how to secure my LCD. I don't know if you can tell from the picture above, but it is just laying on its frame unsecured. That is all I got for the LCD since I bought it as a package deal.
MINOUS
Welcome to the addiction! I'm still in lurk mode myself, so needless to say I'm jealous that you're starting what I'm sure will be a really fun journey. And you're following in the footsteps of a true master.

As for securing your LCD, I was thinking about using mirror mounts. You may have them in your bathroom, holding a mirror on the wall or on the back of a door. You may need to paint them black, and you may need to trim them a bit to keep them out of the image area of the LCD, but they might work.

Best of luck on your build.

Thanks MINOUS. Glad to be here.

Anyone know how much a Beseler 18" lens is worth? What would you pay for one? I already have a LL standard, but I have a 17" LCD, so there may be dark corners or too short throw. I also have 2 LCD's so I may build 2 projectors if it's a good enough deal. Thanks.

There was a buy it now for like $70 shipped, and that is cheaper than I've seen them before, but I chose to just put a bid on it. meh. by the way, if you want to bid on it, just let me know. I'm not going to compete with other people here and drive the price up for no reason. If I see someones username I recognize, I won't go into a bid war with you.

Looks like you have a good starting point.
Looking at the room placement, you should be sitting pretty.
If I can help at all, just let me know.
I look foreward to seeing your progress.

Thanks pun........

ARRRRRGHHHH. I have been initiated! I can't find the camera at the moment, but I think I'm up a creek. I was trying to setup a way to secure my LCD, and now I have lost the bottom two thirds of my picture. Is the LCD done for? I'm not sure what did it.....blah.

do I have a paddle?

update: so one of the side tabs is screwy and is causing it i think. fiddling with the middle one make some more lines come in.

Right side works, left side is screwy.

Well it looks like there is some good news. I should be getting a 10' da-lite screen for $25. Don't know anything else about it yet. The guy who I'm getting it from is clueless about it and will be sending me more info later today. Hell, I don't think you can't even get that much boc for $25, let alone a real screen that rolls up and all.

Please, please, if you know anything about my panel situation, let me know. Even it is just that it is dead and that I need to strip my other one. Ugh. Thanks.
MINOUS
Hmmmm...I don't know about the problem, but I really like the solution! drink.gif wacko.gif tongue.gif I've read (several times around here) that bending the FFCs too far, too fast, or too roughly can cause problems. They are quite delicate. Hope it works out.

heh, indeed..

I'm not really sure, but i've heard that sometimes the FFC comes loose, or as Minous said, damaged, so i'd carefully poke around there.

double check all your connectors. those areas are not getting signal. The edge connectors are fragile and need to be supported. good thing you have two panels! looks like you have a good start though, the parts from justin.langley look well mounted and cleanly done (reflector mount), and the lcd mount is very nice.
I think the mogul screw threads are 10-32. good luck with your build, you will love a big screen!

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I think if after fiddling for an hour or so I can't get anything to work, then I will call it a learning experience and use the panel for AG stripping experience and framing for testing. We shall see....

well i know its a carpeted picture king. that gets me here. So that makes it either a matte white or a high power. I think if it was high power that would be noticeable. I don't really care though, matte is fine for me I'm sure.

Where did you score the screen at?

so I just tried the "who cares" AG strip method. It consisted of the following steps.

start by mixing 1 part apathy and 2 parts resentment.
1. Try to look up how to do it. See SJ saying about reading the "WHOLE" thread. Seeing 100+ page count. Skip step one.
2. Recall seeing pictures of rag soaked LCDs. Realize I don't have distilled water. Realize I don't care. Emulate rag soak.
3. Recall 2-?? hour soak time, get bored after 1.5 hours.
4. Rip AG off fairly easily*. (If I actually cared about this monitor I would have let it soak longer, but I wasn't shy about pressure due to the broken nature of it.)

So I don't know if there was any question about the Acer 1715, but the AG is pretty easy to strip. Also, instead of 1/3 of the screen being fine and 2/3 being 99% garbage; 2/3 is 40% garbage and 1/3 is nothing. Gotta find whats causing this and play.

Good day today. I resolved myself to the fact that the Acer was dead and started on the LG. I tested the side tabs on the Acer to see how strong they were connected, and it was kinda scary how easily they came off. So that made me pretty tense for the LG strip. blink.gif

Things went well. It was an easy strip. I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw my wife's desktop background.

Now to put it away until I get the frame dremeled out. The adrenaline still isn't out of my system. blink.gif

The stand is so cool too. You can angle and rotate it in any direction. I plan on using it for something, I dunno what.

Im considering buying this lens. The thing is, it has a 1/4" scratch in the middle as you can see. Would this make it worthless? Could it be fixed? Would it not even be noticeable?
