Full Version: Rptv With Collapsable Frame

I like the way brainchild built his rptv with a removable projector. Do you guys think it's possible to make a rptv with a collapsible frame? Or is it just a pipe dream?

I don't know much about RPTV's but i think they use a large mirror and large lens on the screen, correct?

I'm sure you could make a folding frame, but how heavy would it be? you'd have to be very careful moving it.

if you are looking for something more portable, you might want to just go with a standard front projection setup.

I was imagining putting it on rollers, pushing it in to put away and possibly having something hang over it when it's not in use, like a picture or mural.

I'm thinking of it like this not for the portability, but to recover the space (when it's not in use) that a projection tv takes.

I like the idea of a projector for special occasions, and don't watch that much tv, but a rptv would be cool.

I see what ur saying. you want a murphy bed sort of design. Hidden when not in use but pulls out easily when needed.

i haven't seen that done here (yet). I'd say draw up some plans and give it a go!

I've been thinking of building a rptv but essentially build a straight shooter projector(or maybe a vertical) and then just having a standing screen I can set where I want and aim the pj at the back of it, kind of like one of those standing signs you see at restaraunts "Please wait to be seated" ? so it would be a 2 piece rptv, then you could just wheel the pj into another room or corner when not in use and put the screen away, it would also make placing it wherever you want easier..... though you'd have to have at leats 5 feet behind wherever you wanted to put the screen ..... and make sure there were no lights on behind the screen (on the same side as the projector.... for me, my dining room is right off the living room do I could place the screen essentially in the doorway between the two rooms and the projector would actually be halfway into the dining room....

Yes that's exactly it!

I would love to just jump right into it, and start building a projector, but I have only been here lurking around reading, and reading, and reading, for a month now. And I still don't feel like I understand enough yet. But I am formulating some ideas.

It's great encouragement though to get started drawing up the plans. I'll have to see what I can come up with biggrin.gif

Yah that would be a lot easier, and less messy. But it wouldn't have the benefit of encapsulating the light so it's better to view in the day time without all the lights having to be off. I've seen SPK's rptv plog and I'm imagining something about that size, so I can get the brightness.

yeah that would be the main objection I had about my idea too, then I thought of a giant megaphone and enclose the path between the pj and the screen...of course then you have to figure out where the giant megaphone goes when you're not using it...hey, I never said it was a great idea laugh.gif

lol...I'm just imagining carrying a giant megaphone around.

You know I was doing some additional reading, and I don't know why I forgot this but I read* that you can achieve the same results by placing the projector closer. Either way, I think that a rptv with mirrors is a lot cleaner setup than having a projector sitting 5 feet away from the tv all the time. Not to mention having to deal with a giant megaphone. Wonder if I could play that like a didj tongue.gif
