I was thinking about it, and how would you secure, say, aluminum to the cutting surface? Wouldn't it move around while being cut?

Carpet tape, you would be very surprised how well it works.

Vacuum can be used with pretty good results for holding things down. I guess that's one idea that sucks and works at the same time!
