I need a 20pin FFC extender to make my X2GEN monitor work in my pj. Probem is that the 20pin FFC is on reserve in the LL store and I have looked all over the net for another source to no avail.

I was thinking of buying one of the 30pin FFC extenders from the LL store and cutting it down to 20 pins on the side that goes into the LCD board. Has anyone done anthing like this? I think it should work.

I saw a post about someone who needed an 11 pin FFC who was thinking about cutting down an FFC, but I don't remember the outcome.

I am not opposed to spending the 15 bux or whatever to test it out. (a minor expese compared to the rest of the project.
I suppose another question is does anyone know an alt. source for FFC extensions?

You can get 20 pin Ffcs on www.digikey.com

If it is 1m pitch then these are the part #'s :

6" WM10059-ND
8" WM10072-ND

And the zif connector is :

WM7683CT-ND

If it is .5mm pitch then these are the part #'s :

6" WM10218-ND
8" WM10242-ND

And the zif connector is :

WM7710CT-ND

Thanks I have looked around and found digikey but never got all the info that I needed to order.
Thank you so much for the help. I have ordered them and they are on the way with.

I also ordered the Mega kit from the LL store and the large frezzies from 3dlens (to accomidate the 15.4 WS)

I am so psyched to get this thing going finally. I signed up in January and I it is high time I got this build going.

on another note if anyone is interested I have a good source for the 110" blackout cloth
I bought 16' of it for what is going to be my huge widescreen. (price $60)

I think you should make a seperate post about it.. a lot of people have been looking for a good source recently, but many of them probably won't visit this thread smile.gif

Computercowboy,

As far as the Black Out Cloth is concerned... I'm definitely interested. If you wouldn't mind sending me a PM with the information, I'd appreciate it.

Also, if you could you place a LINK to your friend's post, when it becomes available, so no one has to search who is reading this topic, that would also be greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

Cowboy, you ended up getting the WM7710CT-ND Zif connector from digikey then?

I've got the same monitor on its way, and I want to be sure I get the right extension.

Thanks man.

I got the same monitor, too. Is it easy to tell which pitch(distance between the individual wires) the FFC cable is?

Basically a 1mm pitch means each pin is 1mm apart. For a .5mm pitch there will be 2 pins per 1mm length.

Dude you have been the biggest help to me by far on this forum. I am on my way to 1080p. (eventually)
mostly because of your help.

not to downplay help from others like tescorp, Rorshach and many more.

I care not about speeelling

The only place that spelling matters is in my source code and that is what the debugger is for.

I'm having trouble with the FFC extension on the X2Gen's panel. I finally decided to strip it tonight. I got it all open and took off the backlight and all the extra sheets of whatever. Then I ran into trouble:

first the 8" .50mm 20 position FFC that I got from Digi-Key is not an extension, but just a FFC cable, I mean both ends are male!

and the zif connector that I got, WM7710CT-ND, that matches the FFC cable.... am I supposed to solder that in somewhere??? (was hoping it to be a double female adapter) I thought these extenders were gonna make this easy...

and then, on top of that, I can't get the new FFC cable from Digi-Key to even fit in the original zif socket. It's too thick, the zif socket won't close!

What am I not doing or doing wrong????

For any of you interested in this monitor you will have to deal with this

It is a 20 pin and the white connector on the left is super easy to use so don't sweat it.

Here is a post with more info about it http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=15669
it is .5mm
EDIT
Christof was asking for more info about extending the FFC on the x2gen so I am adding some.

First you need the parts get
WM10242-ND
and
WM7710CT-ND

from digikey.com

now you need to free the FFC from the ZIF. All you have to do for that is put a fingernail under the white plastic part that is show in the picture above on the left. To clarify the fingernail goes between the FFC and the top of the ZIF. It should flip up with minimal force.

now the FFC is free 1/3 done

the FFC from digikey is way too thick to fit in the ZIF on the x2gen. It is also a little too thick to fit in its own ZIF when you mash the FFC from the board in there with it. Here is my solution. I took a rounded exacto knife blade and held it perpendicular to the backside of the end of the FFC (the one from digikey) then I moved it back and forth rapidly shaving the blue part of the cable down to make it thinner. It took about ten minutes to shave down both ends. If you had a dremmel with some sort of sanding attachment it would work a lot faster but you would have to be careful not to go to far.

once the ends of the digikey ffc are shaved down enough I would recomend putting the 2 FFCs together first into the ZIF from digikey. I felt like I needed a third hand when I did this. Just open the digikey ZIF and with the 2 FFCs (pins together) jam it into the ZIF. I found that mine jammed in there and didn't want to come out again so I didn't glue it, but some suggest you glue it. then take the other end of the digikey FFC and stick it into the ZIF on the board and flip the little clip/lever back down and you are done.

no big deal

I have F'ed around with this monitor a lot and it still works great so don't worry (besides these things are cheap as dirt so it is not like there is that much risk)

got home late from work today
Overtime: 1.5hrs
Reason: fell asleep under the desk, Castanza style

I had a set of exacto blades and one of them was rounded. So I was able to follow those directions to a "T", and successfully! I bent the new FFC cable so that there would be less stress on the original one, but I don't think I have much to worry about. The monitor is brand new and the cable is years from brittle.

thanks Cowboy

It is not a big problem to cut the FFC..I needed 16pins with 0,5pitch and the total widh was only 8mm, but all i could get was a FFC cable with 20 pins?!? the tricky part was to conect it with the std FFC, to have them exactly towards eachother!! I spended about 1 our to get it right (puuuh!) but the LCD started up just fine.

Good luck Martyman!

Doing it this way, is the digikey ZIF only being used as a way to hold together the 2 FFC cables? So the digikey ZIF metal connectors aren't being used and the 2 ffc connectors are actually touching each other directly? Or am I misunderstanding?

I have the x2gen stripped on my floor and I'm trying to figure this out :-p

Thanks for the help

that is correct. YOu could make a little clamp i have seen tescorp do it that way. the zif makes it easy cause it aligns them perfectly.

Excellent, thanks a lot smile.gif
