Natural Newbie
Hello again. This is the start of my HT, just some pictures of the current state; for comparison when it is finished!

A view of the temporary screen from behind the couch. The windows will have curtains made of black velvet for light control (wonderful girlfriend will be making those! biggrin.gif )

Pool table and bar to the right, not part of the theatre but very nice

The AV cabinet I designed, the girlfriend and I just built it this past saturday/sunday. It is maple plywood, stained with minwax golden oak, then 2 coats polyurethane clear satin. It is only screwed together, I was too lazy to get the glue out

A back shot, showing where the power switch panel will go, and the "wind tunnel" for e ballast

Speaker stand the girlfriend and I built, she is so handy/helpful! cool.gif Just 10x10x1 pine and PCV, with black veltet apholstry

A shot to the rear of the room, Closet contains 12" JL audio sub, DVDs and video games (will get pick of that later)

As of now sound is from a samsumg HTIB, stock speakers for center and rears, older bose are for the fronts, and JLB 12" sub. Sound is not matched by any means, but it is close, sounds decent, and is decently loud/clear.

The final screen will be 120", 16:10 frame with black velvet borders.

The couch is broken and being glued right now, all will be well in the coming months!

looks good.. but you need some larger speakers to put those stands to use smile.gif smile.gif

you will find a significant improvement in the perceived brightness of your projector if you were to paint the room darker. The bright ceiling it working against you as well, but I am sure you are pretty limited with the tiles. Looks like you have alot of room to work with.

Yea I was thinking that. I bought the house with that color basement, so it will stay that color for a while. Lots of room is true biggrin.gif .

Thanks for the advice!

Got the pool table light in this past week. Thought I would add it to my HT/gameroom PLOG.

The PJ in its glory nesting behind the couch

Side view of the PJ on the AV stand, samsung 5.1, oppo dvd, xbox360

screen ended up 106" 16:10, i think it actually is proportioned better than the 120" was, but I cant brag as much now tongue.gif

Also I am making 3" wide black velvet border for the screen. Working on that soon.

the closet behind the PJ, for movies and games and CDs. also houses the 12" sub. It just so happend the sweet spot for the sub is in the closet (for when your sitting in the couch area). Sounds realy good. And suprizingly the movies dont rattle. The doors did, but I fixed that with some foam strips in on the track.

Screen border finished. black fidelio velvet.

Also notice (in the post above) the windows are covered with black felt, for light control during the day.

Yes i do admit, we will just have to get you to work on the audio setup you have a nice box and audio stand working for you with the PJ. You are going through some great lentgths. It looks good. Im jealous in the fact you have a ceiling haha. I have a finished basement and 15k or so in theatre with commercial PJ now i just need to sell the commercial PJ which is awesome now i just need to move up and build my 1080p setup. Good job so far though i like it.

Yes my audio is lacking, that is the next thing to be changed. Im thinking ONKYO 7.1, not sure of the speakers yet. It is still very enjoyable as is though.

Thanks for the compliments! Good luck on your DIY PJ and theatre!

you're missing an arcade game... maybe I should finish my screen today
freefall
I told my wife I wanted to get Galaga from a place down the road...She shut that down faster than I can blink.
Blownshift
That's why you have to bring it home and get it in place before she sees it. Then tell her to move it if she wants to get rid of it. Ever have an empty arcade cabinet chase you down the stairs? I gutted mine just to move it and it was still HEAVY.

I think I'll make a mini one, tabletop, and stick a Dreamcast and 13 inch tv in it. Alot easier to move.

Eventually, I want a 2 and 4 player cabinet and a sit-down racing cabinet and stick Dreamcasts and Xboxs in them.

do it do it do it... I have 3 or 4 dreamcasts that I stock piled when the price went down to $20 for used ones at GameStop. You can still get them cheap off of ebay. I have 80+ games and alot of them are arcade ports which I like because of my short attention span. You can call the arcade shops and see if they have any empty cabinets for $20 - $50. Sometimes they just give them away. Check ebay for local listings too. Then you put in a tv, get the controls from www.happcontrols.com , finish the control panel, add a bezel or whatnot and poof, an arcade machine that plays hundreds of dreamcast games. You can go the MAME route with a pc too.

Alrighty, this is the start of my batcave conversion.

I will be hanging velvet on the ceiling with these hooks and buttons

Here I was just seeing the effect of having a "floating screen",. i just quickly draped the fabric behind the screen, the effect is very nice.
On the right side I will have black velvet on a track

hooks on drop ceiling

I finished the closet already

eventually I am going to take the metal racks out, and build a nice wooden shelf to hold lots of DVDs and games (right now my collection is slim, so the racks are fine) blockbuster online is nice smile.gif

hooks are from http://www.hangups.com/
buttons are from http://www.bblackandsons.com/store/product398.html
rail is from http://www.briteinc.com/page-Curtain-Track...iers-Hooks.html
velvet is from http://dazian.com royal velvet wide

I cant wait for a floating screen and even better contrast ratio!
Natural Newbie
progress. its already looking pretty cool like an imax or something, cant wait to finish it tomorro!

NinHowFritz
Neat! That toshiba had better be good, I'm getting one! laugh.gif
Natural Newbie
The toshiba is good. GSX, me, and ChristmasGT all agree!
NinHowFritz

ok, I'm coming to visit! ...I'll bring the beer!
Natural Newbie
Here are some panoramic shots (images spliced together) to get the real theatre effect the black cloth has

Out of anything we can do to our projectors or theatures, the bat cave was the biggest gain in an immursive experience

In a years time, I am going to be getting black suede couches, and a new sound system, and the theatre will be complete!

Looks good. Radio Shack has the Yamaha HTR-5940 6.1-Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver for $159. I got one a few months ago. It has only one digital coax and two optic inputs but I didn't need one with alot of hookups.

I need to see how your projector looks. I can only hope to keep the Evo running for another year or two until I can build one but the damn thing keeps crapping out. My bulb lasted 1,000 hrs and poof. The ballasts keep dying. Who knows Chinese? I'll tell them to add more lead if it'll keep their crap from breaking down.
Natural Newbie
So i went to a garage sale and picked up two perfect condition yamaha speakers for $20.

They kick ass.

http://www.oaktreeent.com/web_photos/Speak...ers_salvage.jpg

And i have KLH center and rear channels. My sound system is pretty damn good for cheap stuff. All i need now is a better receiver and ill be happy with my sound system.
Blownshift
the speakers I'm using are garage sale ones.. All are the old big floor standing type. I have 4 Fishers (2 different models) and 2 JVCs. Even though they're cheap and 20+ yrs old they still sound quite good.

I knocked together a HTPC to run the movies with. I wanted to be able to adjust video color, etc and process the audio. I'm using an old SoundBlaster 5.1 card. That way, I can add treble/bass and then use a graphic equalizer to tweak the audio. It sounds so much better than passthrough. Only problem is that I have to send it to the receiver as analog or 2 channel PCM. So I lose my discrete channels and have to let the amp create the channels. It usually does a good job but it isn't perfect. My amp has analog inputs which would be perfect, I would still get the discrete channels, except that the amp won't add it's DSP to the analog inputs and I need that. I need the amp DSP, the Sound Blaster's Treble/Bass controls, and whatever dvd playback or filter program for the equalizer. I can't do without any of those so I'm stuck with 2 channel sound but the sound is so much better so it's worth it.
