The digital port on the Kontron is DVI, not HDMI. I don't know about version specs, but the manual says the DVI supports up to 1920x1200.

heli0s

guess it just has to do what the highest panels are at. That's fine for me, I just wanted to make sure I can get the full 1920x1200 and not just 1080p. Gonna be running through a A/V receiver for all video inputs and from the receiver to the PJ so I only need the one input myself, but high enough for my computer hooked up to it.

Sorry to break off from the controller discussion, but does anybody want to give their experiences with the Samsung panel and stripping the reflective layers or antiglare?

I should be getting mine on Saturday, and am very interested in removing, most likely, the reflective layers.

I have the same Q I looked all over for a strip of that same samsung and have not found anything

Haha, at least one other person is also curious. I should be getting my panel and controller on Tuesday, so when I get it I am going to do a few things to answer a few questions that I had, and post them in my PLOG.

I'm going to show what it looks like when different resolutions are scaled and such (with the realtek controller), as well as give detailed information on the antiglare and reflective layer stripping.

Looooong time reader and researcher, first inquiry on the discussion of the Kontron....

Okay, so im a film major and feel relatively up to date on most of this HD format nonsense and, thanks to a lot of information in this forum, a greater understanding of how most of it works/doesnt work in this crazy transitional age into the beyond.

so my question revolves around a few areas of hardware and why everyone is so bent out of shape over HDCP over HDMI (aside from the obvious reason of it being the bastard child of those digital rights assholes). im looking for a contoller for my first PJ, and pumping 1080p for blu-ray, HDDVD, Xbox360, and PS3 is a must. i know HDMI is (in most eyes) the most lossless of ways to get the signal to the PJ (considering it is a straight forward digital signal), but i have no gripes with getting the same lines of resolution out of a component connection. is everyone whos spending 400+ on the known HDCP enabled controllers really that much of relentless videophiles as to claim that 1080p through component isnt good enough? or am i missing something?

all these systems/hardware is available with component outputs, is the lure of future HDMI versions what keeps everyone excited? and if so, arent we still limited to the firmware versions installed on all these boards anyways? (wich could very easily be all the way back to 1.0)

so, with that said, i know the realtek will do the job for me, but are there any other solutions that also have DVI and without scrounging through the forums for another hour at 420 in the morn, can i get a few links and estimated prices? i appreciate it guys, i cant wait to see what you do with the kontron, but im getting really antsy, and HDMI doesnt seem to be a must in my eyes. feel free to flame.

oh one more thing...scaling would be a nice feature as well, considering my roomates are bringing in a Wii soon, but its not a must.
alife_ofratios
may i also add....

i think it would be a great idea to get a sticky going with an organized breakdown/description/photos of all the boards out there. i know one already exists in a pretty basic sense, but theres a lot of boards out there since i last checked my bookmark, and i think it could be a really easy reference for people who are all wondering and asking the same questions. the thread: http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=15376 is simply for people looking for 1080p, but alot of people out there are still looking for cheaper solutions.

id love to do the research and get a basic organization down, but ive yet to work with any hardware and feel inadequate with my ability to fully describe the ins-and-outs of all the boards out there. i think if it were organized in a fashion of seen below, a lot of people would stop adding the same 20 posts to an already 57 page long thread, such as myself biggrin.gif

[PHOTO] = Labled
1. compatibility with (x) LCDs
- be it size, manufacturer, serial
2. available ins and outs
3. available resolutions
4. compatibility with HDCP (for those that apply)
5. compatible common devices
- Xbox, Playstation, HDDVD, Blu-ray, DVD upscalers, etc
6. Where to order and Price

and by the by, if anyone wanted to send me photos (of decent reso.) of the boards to be labeled with the proper ins/outs, i would have no problem doing so.
jonjandran
The problem with 1080p over component.

Most devices won't truly allow it.

The PS3 does not allow Blu-Rays to play over 1080i on component. And Dvd upconverting is limited to 480p over component.

The same with the Xbox 360.

The only way to get true 1080p is Hdmi for the PS3 and Hdmi or Vga for the Xbox 360.

As for your second comment I have done a 1080p Wuxga Fyi thread here:
http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=15376

It will answer most of your questions. Why add all the boards that "might" be used? None of them are programmed to work with the 15.4" Wuxga and most likely none of them will be. If they are I will add them.
HitesFiero
I got my new LVDS cable built, and it works well. I used two salvaged JAE 30s and used stranded fine wire from an EIDE ribbon cable. I peeled the pairs and hand twisted them super tight. I then tripple foil sheilded the whole bundle and shrink tubed it. It works well. I'm back to tweeking the panel software. I have more updates soon.

Hi.
I'm not sure where you're getting $400, but there are only two right now with HDCP that I know of, Kontron and MST. For me personally, IMO, the specs on the Kontron are some of the best around, with proper scaling and all. Even if the HDCP didn't work, I would still want it. And the price is only about $270 w/OSD according to those who have bought one. johnzo1995 sells the MST which already does HDCP for even less at around $225 i think, his store, it just doesn't do 1:1 scaling. If you can live without scaling and can't wait, it's also a great option. But for some, scaling is a real issue, maybe more so than HDCP (since there are strippers out there now like HDFury).

Another goof (fixed), I meant $270. Based on HF's post here since he's one of the few so far who have actually bought one direct. And this assumes of course you can make your own cable.

I was able to find a new one on ebay for only $150 thanks to GarfingSharks' post. I was also looking at smartmicrousa, but beware. I came close to buying one, but then I emailed them and asked if theirs was a genuine LG, and they reponded saying no, it was only a "compatible" one!

At this time, LG only makes a 17" glossy WUXGA panel. The 15.4" form factor is still a matte finish AG.

Other vendors have the glossy finish, and SmartMicro seems like the best source for these at the moment.

I'm curious if the glossy finish negates the need to remove the AG, or if it affects the transmittance enough to still want to strip something off of the front... Anyone have any real experience with the glossy panels that can comment?

Once again for everyone.

The Mst stretches everything to 1920x1200 through every input.

The G2A221 does 1:1 pixel mapping.

The MST supports almost any resolution from the PC over Vga. And it supports 720p/1080i/1080p video signals over vga. But it stretches all those signals to 1920x1200.

P.S. VGA is analog not digital.

Well that is the first thing I am going to try when I get my MST controller, over ride the max res on the hdmi, but I doubt it will work, but I am for sure gonna try.

But if a pc is used how can it stretch a signal that is already sending a 1920x1200 signal.

If you have HD content on your PC then you're going to be good as the software you use will give you the ability to change aspect ratio to preserve 16:9 of HDTV. Perhaps I can say most encrypted sources of HD content are things like HD cable and satellite boxes ? For these you need to use the HDMI/DVI, Component, and in some cases VGA outputs to get HD. The problem is there is no way to currently get these as inputs into a PC (well, without spending big $), so you need a controller outside of using a PC that will handle HD signals the way you want, which for some includes having the ability to maintain the aspect ratio of the incoming signal of HDTV at 16:9, vs. the native 16:10 of the LCD itself.

Hi Everybody.

Got some bad news, I just got an email from my contact at Kontron:

I’m afraid after all this time that the crttolcd or anything else in this particular Kontron product range cannot be made compatible with the lcd. George has tried everything and the issue seems to be with the colour mapping, which gives a shocking reproduction that he or anybody else in Germany cannot improve on. He has spent hours trying to get a resolution to the problem but now has given up, something I have never seen him do in the several years I have known him. He is sending the unit back and I will return it to you.

So yeah... Kinda sucks!
jonjandran
Well that just stinks. And it's quite odd. huh.gif

I might of found a solution for our problems with 1:1 stretching though.

Has anybody heard of BlackMagic Intensity pro?

I am a photographer/videographer - and I am going to buy one sometime soon. Basically what it is - is a HDMI input/output unit for a computer - also has analog inputs, so basically you use a computer plugged into your projector - then you can scale all your inputs on the computer.

Only problem would be - getting a program that can display the input at full screen without any delay - cause its basically just used for capturing.

Also - not sure about HDCP on it - that might also be a problem

http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/ is the website for it

EDIT: Sorry - it doesnt have HDCP on it so you cant record from a HDCP source, so I assume you wont be able to just play that source either.

Get some sort of scaller like a key digital to sqash the image a little bit before it goes into the MST. The problem is that is an expesive fix. ~$600 minimum

Yeah - too expensive, and the $600 cheap ones arent usually the best anyway.

Is there any way to contact the makers of the controller and get them to put 1:1 scaling into the board? it cant be that hard to implement can it?

Well I think I am just gonna get a G2A221 and a HDFury

Are there any known problems with those 2 items together? I remember reading somewhere about 1080p over the G2A221 is a problem or something?

HitesFiero, is this color mapping problem the same as what you have run into? Or do you think it is more of a timing/signaling/cabling issue you're dealing with right now? Hopefully the issue Kontron ran into was specific to that Toshiba panel...

I can confirm this to be true as of today. I got my max resolution problem resolved and have been beating on the programing now for a week. The colors are very "off". I'm not giving up! This is a firmware issue nothing more. This controler just has too much to offer to just give up on it. Part of the problem may be the fact that these panels are early LVDS WUXGA desighns from 5 years ago, I don't know, I'm just speculating. I'll try to get some screen shots of the color madnes up soon.
-Bill-
On my 15inch sharp UXGA thats about 5 years old I have gone into the nvidia advanced timings page for my Quadro4 700GoGL and adjusted the timing and refresh rate and stuff a little bit, and an image still displays on the screen. So I don't think the timing has to be perfectly exact to get some sort of usable image. My LCD is a precursor to those widescreen ones so it probably works in a similar fashion. I wonder though, could we buy newer sharp WUXGA screens and they might be easier to work with?

Good luck with the color programming HitesFiero. Maybe you need an encouragement smiley and some Red Bull to keep going. smile.gif post-418-1138467278.gif

The problem is the base firmware that drives the card. I have no way to modify that. I am using the latest version, but may try an older one, but if an actual Kontron engineer couldn't do it then I just don't know. I am considering using a Samsung 14.1 WXGA+ 1440x900 panel instead so I can make the PJ smaller and decrease the precondenser to collector fres distance to increase the brightness.

I wonder if there might be a sort of hack to help us here... any chance tweaking the panel file's gamma or lvds maps or color definitions could counter-act whatever the problem is? Maybe then the OSD stuff could get all the way if a hack could get it part way.

I'm interested in seeing what the picture looks like now. Thanks for your persistence! Maybe in time you'll beat it into submission... still hoping. smile.gif

If it is a firmware issue, any chance of working your magic again and getting a firmware editor/compiler and source? I know it's a long shot, but maybe they'll take pity since they can't get it to work.
