During the researching of putting my projector together I had come across some websites relating to CRT projectors. These are the old 3 gun huge units. According to all of the information I have seen the specs on most of these are vastly superior to LCD projectors. Most of these units went for $15k and up new. For fun I found one local for $200 bought it and set it up. I am very impressed with the picture and this is one of the low end units. The tube life is 10,000 - 15,000 on most of these projectors. Because of the weight, 65 lbs to 200 lbs when people sell these projectors they would prefer to do it locally so you can generally get a really good deal on them. I would suggest that you keep your eyes open in your area for one of these. Does anyone else have any experience using a CRT projector?

I picked up an old sony off ebay for $160 shipped. Works fine has a pretty good image but inputs are a pain (not so much for later models). Convergence is always an issue for these (again, not so much for later models) and they require quite a bit of setup "know how" in order to get the best performance out of them. They will never give the razor sharp images you CAN get with lcd but that is generally ok for movie viewing as it is actually preferred to have a slightly softened image anyway (razor sharp is more for data). So they are a good option although at the prices I'm in it for it is only a toy. My real theater will be lcd when I'm done.
Cheers...
