Thanks to Dave-NYC for finding the HQI 2k lamps from Germany. The lamp is still listed for sale here.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=7541764626

I don't know if they will ship to the USA I got three lamps from a tip that miedosoracing gave me from a seller in the UK for a great price. Thanks again miedosoracing.

The lamp runs at 220v at 10.3A with a life of over 4000 hours and a color temp of 6000k It is a 90CRI lamp (edit)with a 32mm arc.

There is no 120V ballast that will run this lamp so I matched up one the best I could. The 1000 watt HPS ballast is the closet match but is not realy large enouf so I was planing on using two but the guy on ebay sold me a MH instead.
I got some money back on 1000 watt MH so it was cheep and will still work.

I got lucky with the two ballast If you just hook the two in paerllel they make almost exactly 2000 watts. The lamp must be started on the HPS ballast then the second ballast is swtched in. The ballast must be wired + to + and ground to ground or tou will blow the fuse. The two ballast will draw about 20A from the line. This may require some upgrades. Dual power cords from different breakers would be a cheep fix. I have a 40A outlet.

I made a lamp holder from a new 500 watt RX socket. The lamp has cable leads so the socket just has to hold the lamp. The lamp can float in the socket nicely.

The first fire of the lamp it was really blue so I have stepped up the power to a little over 2500 watts! The color temp has come down and the lamp light looks a lot better.

I would like to say that the lamp makes 180,000 lumens at 1,950 watts and even more at 2500 watts. I am almost scaring my elf with the power levels now. This thing is really bright. It makes my little 1200 watts look like a toy.

I am going to do the break in and some lux testing with the lamp as I get time. I am short a 330mm Fresnel right now and am thinking that I may need a 550mm for the rear fresnel because of the heat.

This lamp may not have ozone protection built in. I have has a fairly strong smell of ozone while the lamp is running. It may be that the lamp makes the same amount as the 1200 watter but the power level is higher so it just makes more ozone.

If in-fact the lamps make a lot of ozone then the PJ will have to be an outside only unit.

The arc was riding on the top of side of the lamp but now it is going straight.

The lamp still hot.

The lamp running with a 500 watt 3200k lamp next to it. I woiuld guess the temp to be around 6000k still

From yesterday at a low 2200 watts still green then.

ph34r.gif When you say the lamp is giving off a lot of ozone you are referring to O3 correct? huh.gif Yikes!

2500 watts? I hope you have some good insurance for your home... unsure.gif

Good luck, I keep getting amazed at what you pull out next! biggrin.gif

Hey AZ! Nice white dwarf. smile.gif So what is the arc length you figure?

This fairly common lamp for large fixtures overseas. It runs at a lower pressure than all the HMI types and has a nice long life. I am running it at 2500 watt mainly to make the break in faster. After break in I will lower the power some.

The other HQI I has was way too blue too until I ran it hard for about ten hours. The CRI is generally higher when you over drive the lamp some.

Whether or not any one needs 225,000 lumens is an open question.

For some reason I keep getting tossed over to the extreme mods? Must have been the part about the Ozone?

I'm still thinking of the type of LCD /Fresnels that might be best for such a lamp.

Right now I'm thinking of a 30" fl Beseler triplet with a 21" LCD and a two giant 3'x4' 27" fl Fresnels. Finding a condenser lens that will take the heat may be hard too.

If I keep it up maybe I can get bumped to the Mad Scientist area.

All the lamps make some O3 when they start and run. There is a coating they put in the quarts to stop that in most lamps. For the use this lamp is made for they migh not have added it into the shell. Right now it's hard for me to tell. My wife was mixing fragrance oils in the back room and I'm allergic to one of them so all I do when I go to the test area is sneese and my eyes start to burn. This is before I start the lamp.

I wii find out more later.

Please can I ask where do you get a 30"inch FL Beseler from ?
With that I could put the PJ behind seating !

Cheers

I don't have one. I found some one that might have one? They show up on ebay some times. The fresnels are just as imporant and a true 700mm fl is hard to find. The pro fresnels are really 610mm fl.

I'm a long way from buying more parts. I have two other projects that when they start my free time will be gone for a long time.

I believe I could get away with a 330/550 fresnel setup. Man would that baby be bright. I just don't want to push over 1200w to my plug in. Otherwise, I would be thinking about buying that setup from ya. wink.gif

The arc is 32mm

Whats a white dwarf?

The break in is finished and I need to redo my test setup some before doing more testing, it will take some time.

I have the lamp burning and ready to go but I'm short a 330mm fresnel and the good reflector is in my main PJ I have a spare LCD with a bad FFc for testing too But I'm looking at screen materal right now and the Wife think I should move on to the real things to fix.

There is something to learn here. Will the contrast hold up? heat?

I do have my 600mm/220mm/10" colortran heat glass/2000 watt lamp Ikea reflector just for fun? It is cooler now almost 60 tonight

Nah... Only way to go is... Mega bulb
Only downside, is paying that price for the amount of hours it lasts.

I know you guys are having fun but it is worth looking at the 2000 watt lamp if you have the need for around a 1000 ANSI PJ with a lamp with a 5000 hour life and sells for less than $200 new with a 90 CRI it really is a perfect lamp for a jumbo PJ or just some one too cheep to buy a central heater in there house. biggrin.gif

And a large lamp needs a large condenser lens so I bought two of these 8x8 condensers lenes. The darn thing is over 2 1/2" thick, It's a whopper!

Of corse the little one droped the one before I could sa hold on. It bounced. ohmy.gif
The idea here is a larger condenser lens will let me move it away from the lamp and not loose much light. I could place the heat glass before the lens too.

I was thinking lamp/ heat glass/ 8x8 condenser/ 550mm fresnel/550mm fresnel/ 18" triplet.= 1000 ANSI ?

The little lens on the right is a 6x9. In real life the 8" lens is just huge it looks more than twice as large as the little 6".

My wife informed me that I said I was not going to be buying any more PJ parts but I had to explane that this was a rare find, that went over real well unsure.gif
Ronin
gosh those are huge! Can you say "UFO"

LMAO man that Mega Bulb is ridiculous!
