I was thinking to use a Potting Compound to protect the
stripped lcd electronic parts (controller etc.)

Did any of you guys do it?

Should it be ok?

That's cool! I never knew such a thing existed!

Looking into it, though, it's probably overkill. The electronics usually go in the front of the pj (where the lens is), and where it's generally cool(er). The LCD panel will melt and become unusable long before the temperature gets hot enough to damage the circuit boards.

On the other hand, if you're mounting the circuit boards on the LAMP side of the fresnels, maybe it's needed.

Which brand are you looking at? Where do you get it? How much does it cost?

One disadvantage is that once you use it, it may become difficult to upgrade your LCD in the future (if it ends up being cemented into the pj).

Wouldn't hurt... and using Black potting would help prevent light scatter.

Plus, it would look real cool. biggrin.gif

Yep, it is cool. I have found it on some military tech exhibit.

The main point of it is not heat protection but wear-and-tear protection, accident fall or scratch protection. I want to use the electronisc parts freely without
beeing extra careful with them

No way, i just want to do elegant plastic boxes with electronics inside.

I think the fragile part is about the Flat Flexible Connectors (FFCs). If they break and the ends are sealed in the plastic box, you won't be able to fix them.

There should be very little wear and tear on the circuit boards. Once they're mounted inside, you should not be touching them or playing with them.

I get the impression that this is pretty expensive, too. None of the manufacturers seem to post their prices. Amazon has a little tube listed as "potting compound" and it costs $16.65. Mostly industrial use, probably.

I'm interested in any sources anyone has on a potting compound. I jumpered my LCD's horizontal and vertical driver boards as tight as possible with a ground plane to reduce EMI and all is good. Now I wanna change the LVDS connection to edge card and epoxy my H/V boards to the LCD and make it a solid "module". I'm worried about reactance with the compound and want something as inert as possible. And I want something with a tight bond as I would like to prevent flexing between the LCD and driver boards. I will most likely still encase the front and back in glass for extra protection. Any idea's or sources?

Be careful , you may cause early component failure, some of the lcd driver chips are already borderline needing a heat sink, depending on which one you have I guess. But potting may protect the board from anything hitting it , but as far as heat goes , those components need moving air to some extent.

You could use BONDO ( resin plastic body filler ), easy to get in an autoparts store and cheap, I have used it for potting on electronics that I have built so as not to get copied and other things, that is if you decide to do it. It works well.

We use something similar at work. Your idea is quite sound. Just do your reasearch as the stuff we have must be vibrated and then have a vaccum pulled on it as it cures at the prescribed temperature. I'm sure there are probably potting products without all these stringent requirements.

All very interesting! I'm not worried about heat as it pulls less than one watt. I want very much to create modularity between components. I kept the CCFL, inverter, difraction grating, difusion film, light guide, and reflective sheeting and made it a standalone module so I can remove the LCD panel and still use it as a flat panel monitor. I will do some research on sources and post here.

I found numerous sources on black epoxy potting compound, but I'm going excentric trying to find a ceramic potting compound like here curing and reactivity will be paramount in my search. Hopefully I find something useful soon. unsure.gif

GO for the thermal epoxies. The #50-3170 will help dissipate heat. They list quite a few on their site. This one cures at room temp.
