I was reading the Rod Elliot website (thanks a million to Supraguy for posting that link) and I was interested in the electrostatic speakers. I have been searching and have found plenty of information about building them. What I want to know is what is the advantage to them. Can anyone suggest some reading or just explain what the advantage of electrostatic speakers are? Thanks.
David.

I'm not sure how in depth of info you're looking for - but wikipedia had a little bit of info
wikipediaYou could also check some manufacturer websites- not exactly an unbiased opinion, but you could probably get a general idea of the pros/cons vs. a conventional cone type driver.

The sound is incredibly open and full with electrostatics, check out a pair of Martin Logans for an idea of what they sound like. They usually come with a conventional low end driver since they are limited in this range, but more than make up for it with the definition of the mids and highs. Also they're ineficcient and difficult to drive, but if you've got the $ and patience they could be worth it

My Dad got Martin Logan Electrostatics and they sound GREAT. The quality is amazing. You do need a lot of power for them though. They run at 4 ohms and we have an amp that will deliver 800w/ch at 4 ohms. The speakers actually need that. We are still working on our theatre so the speakers are hooked up in a "test" setup in the family room (we really wanted to try them) and only the front 3 speakers are hooked up. Great speakers.
