Hi guys I am a newbie with a capital N. I have a 19" widescreen lcd (samsung 940BW) for my computer, and since the specs are all great along with the price I got another 1 for the projector I want to start. Almost all here use 15" to 17" and Im wondering if I should have gotten a smaller screen is it more complicated to use this size if so why, please give me some info thankyou.
1) With a 19" monitor you must use the pro 500mm triplet and the pro fresnels.. the pro triplet is quite expensive. anything smaller will not have the field of vision required to view the entire monitor and you will get dark and blurry edges. Even a 17" monitor works best with the pro triplet, but you can still get good results with the much less expensive standard 320mm triplet, or lenses found on eBay, etc.
2) 19" monitor offers no real benefit in terms of resolution, depending on what content you will view. The horizontal resolution of the 19" monitor is higher than that of a 17", but its not always useable. 19" widescreen res 1440x900. 17" 5:4 res 1280x1024.
For gaming, its a toss up. If the games you play support widescreen format then the 19" is fine. If they don't, you will be limited to 1024x768 or 1152x864 with black bars on the side, whereas the 17" will display the higher 1280x1024.
For video/tv it depends on what you plan to watch. Both of these monitors can display 720p content without a hitch, however, neither can display the higher standard 1080p, so there is no benefit to a 19" in that respect. The only downside of a 17" compared to a WS 19 for viewing video is the 17 will scale the image slightly.
so to sum it up: 17" displays 4:3 content up to 1280x1024 for games, etc. 17" displays 720p WS content well. 19" WS will chop the edges off 4:3 content and displays 720p flawlessly.
