Have you seen these.

Homemade cables

I haven't tried this so I can't help you but it's a link I found and kept with my other DIY related stuff.

Cheers

Those are only cheap cables he needs to convert (transcode)from YPrPb to RGB. ( and probably rescale).

The Viewsonic N6 and AVerTV Box 9 and the standard solutions the N6 is the olnly one to do HDTV, there is also a Xbox to VGA converter the Neoya X2VGA is supposed to work also.

also $30-$40 is unlikely I think that the X2VGA is ~$70, a little more for the AverTV and expect $120+ for N6

Ebay will get you some friendlier prices on these.

I have this one that is $50, I drive a 8" Hami with it. If you don't my tinkering with settings and tiny switch configurations then it's a great buy to get into component signal. It supports quite a few resolutions by changing the switches. I mainly watch 640 x 480 dvds, so it works fine for my needs. It does wash the color out a little and adjusting this setting offsets the picture so you have to compensate horizontal position in your monitor settings. I would rate it an 7.5 out of 10 for the price.

If you don't mind using your computer, I found that it was a better solution to use my pc and get an hdtv wonder as it supports comp in. Modded xb, hdtv, and computer all outputing to my pj, I can't complain.

If you really want to output to vga from component, the only way to go is to either check out the vdigi or the viewsonic n6. Lik sang is selling the same crappy boxes that people from xbox-scene.com were buying on ebay and complaining about.

I never got this to display an acceptable image (too bright and distorted colours), so you may want to buy an improved version from the same manufacturer.
I've only seen it on playasia.com here.
It supports up to 1080p, so it might be a bit better than the other transcoder.

I don't think an HDTV Wonder has a component video in capability, does it? Not even a pass-through? I know it does component out, though. I sure would love it if it DID do component pass-through.

Alrighty I got mine for $40 even off of ebay used, but with all original parts/accessories (including manual, conversion cables, remote, and converter itself). It has component in, s-video in, composite a/v in, 1/8th" audio in, VGA in, 1/8th" audio out, and antenna/cable in (w/built in tuner), and obviously VGA out. It also has built in speakers in case you're on the go. It has multiple resolutions (unfortunately not HD but it does go up to 1024x768) and the menu allows for all sorts of adjustments to the picture and functions. The actual brand is LongTime but I would just google search it and look for "LongTime Super XGA BOX" or something of the like. Here's a link to one on ebay that is $40 plus $18 or so for shipping. It's been great for me so far. Good luck!
