I couldn't believe how hard it was to find a specs on sheer strength for velcro... I posted my situation from my plog below... I think it would be nice for people to post success stories of velcro. Or maybe there are only 2-3 of us and it won't be of use at all smile.gif

So I'm making a screen frame to hang from the ceiling... It's going to made from aluminum C-Channel. The wide side of the aluminum (7/8") will face front. It's going to be 96x120".

Do you guys think that 3/4" velcro tape on the front of the aluminum will hold the vinyl? The velcro tape holds pretty good on the aluminum and the rough side of the vinyl. My roommate thought option #2 (in the pic) would be a better idea.. .but I think it doesn't take advantage of the sheer strength as it will want to pull away.

vinyl
96" tall * 120" wide = 11520"/12 = 960 square feet
weighs ~10lbs at 125"x140"... need to cut it yet. proportionally it would be 6.5lbs after being cut.

velcro (velcro brand sticky back 3/4" tape with general adhesive)
0.75" wide * (2 sides @ 96" + 2 sides @ 120") = 324"/12 = 27 square feet

I think that the velcro will hold together fine. If anything the velcro pad may detach from the vinyl because the adhesive on the pad may give way. A big determinant of adhesion is the surface area. The larger the better, so if you find a fairly wide strip of velcro, you'll be OK.

May I suggest using a spray on adhesive or, if you're doing option 2 and making a loop, there is some spun glue that looks like fiberglas. You cut it to length and sandwich it between the fabric. Then run a hot iron on the fabric to melt the glue and fuse the panel together.

For my roll-up screen made of BO cloth, I plan on using this iron-in glue to form a loop for the weight rod at the bottom. I'm going to secure the BO screen to the roller cylinder with a wide piece of fabric tape.
