I have a specific urge to get my PC to connect to my projector from another room. It just so happens that this computer is roughly 50ft away. Is there a way to get USB to go farther than 16ft? I figured it would be cool to be able to type, play games, put my racing wheel to use biggrin.gif , etc. on the projector.

Well... what I usually do when I need a quick and dirty really long cable:

Get a really long CAT5 cable and splice in the connectors I need. I'm already
using this for 1 50ft composite and 1 50ft RCA to 1/8" stereo cable. I plan
on making those two into a VGA cable once I get the monitor all set up.

The twisted pairs tend to shield it a bit from noise and stuff, you just end
up getting signal degradation that far. Although I've never tried USB, this
thing here leads me to believe that it's not that odd of a solution. smile.gif

Not without using a repeater. You can go longer then 16 feet without one, however, your signal will begin to lose strength quickly.

Hey Prismatic, when you say a repeater, is it the same as buying one of these "active Usb extenders?" and is it really so that i can only extend 5m and then use a repeater to get another 5m?

Cheers! biggrin.gif

You can link repeaters together, this one allows up to 4 to be used to give a total distance of around 80 feet (24 meters) smile.gif

FYI,
For the topic poster. I use these repeaters and they work great!

I have my computer in my basement and my dell 20" lcd with USB hub connected upstairs with mouse and keyboard. I hook everything to the usb and have never had a problem. MP3 player, mouse, CF reader ...

Also this is running at usb2.0 specs.

The product I used is UAE2-16 but I dont' see a manufacture on the package.

Better yet... Have you heard of USB Wireless? You can read some about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_USB it;s basically a dongle on your computer, and a remote USB hub in your theater room. All you need it an AC outlet for power. I was thinking about this for my recliner... mounting the hub in the arm rest and putting a few USB port on the front of the armrest.
