There is a product sold at only sold at Home Depot's West of the Rockies that everyone is raving about. I was wondering if anyone at LL has tried one. For only $14 I don't think it can be beat. Here is the link below to the thread over at avsforum. If anyone has tried it please report back with results and some screenshots as well.

I originally had my LL PJ that I built but due to limited space in my HT I sold it and bought a Sanyo Z1. I still read the LL forums everyday because I enjoy seeing everyone's progress.

I wonder if you could use a sheet of 4x8 1/4 inch mdf and glue a sheet of white laminate on top and get the same results.

There is a thread at the avsforum concerning laminates. They are really worthwhile for people with screens that are bigger than 4x8.

I think I'm now out of the painted screen game... I don't have the equipment or knowhow to do it right. And I don't have the money to throw away on something that doesn't work. If I spend more on a Da-Lite (which seem to be about $150 on eBay) at least I know it'll work. It does seem that there is a BIG lack of comparison when it comes to the specialty painted screens (conspiracy?).

Now here's something for me! If it's available here (Albuquerque, NM... pretty much on the Rockies) then it's going to be my first screen... I'm tired of looking and $14 is the right price!

GOOD GOD I hate the stupid "searches" they have on retailers web sites! Lowes and HD don't find the most obvious products. Best Buy finds 300 things that you DIDN'T seach for....

lowes and HD have the worst search functions I have ever seen.. ever! I have typed in the EXACT product name as listed on the site and many variations including single words from the name, and have come up completely blank.

Here is the link to the thread. The very first post has a picture of the Home Depot tag. Just get the SKU# and call your local Home Depots. Doable Thread . I was in Alb. in May and I looked at 1 Home Depot and didn't see the product. You might have to call around. Good Luck.

The tag is from '03... The 2 HDs I called couldn't do anything with the numbers from the card. I also gave one of them the SKU (something like 174 ###) and the computer returned "invalid SKU".

Also after reading a little from those 'other' forums I am not confident the product is even still manufactured...

I'm loosing faith in getting either a cheap, or easy to do DIY screen...

That picture was taken in Dec. 2005 so my guess is that your HD just doesn't carry it. They are still making the Doable. That thread is very active with people still buying it. You may be confusing it with the Parkland product.

If you have Lowes try this. Call all of your local Lowes and ask if they carry this SKU #72405. This is the Lowes SKU number for the Parkland Plastic product that alot people use. This is the screen I have. It works great. The deal with the Parkland is they changed the way they manufactured the product so they said it will no longer work well as a screen but Lowes doesn't move alot this stuff so if they carry it they more than likely still have the good stuff in stock. My Lowes in OKC have over 30 sheets laying around. There was only 1 Lowes in my area that had it. If you find it PM me and I will give you instructions on how to install it if you are interested.

There's actually a date on the card in the picture, unless I'm reading it wrong it says: "05/23/03"

Thanks a bunch for the offer! If my room mate was doing the screen I'd definately take you up on that... but I think I'm actually burned out on DIY, I'm tired of just trying stuff, I'm gunna go with a commercially available screen, at least I know it'll be about as good as I'm gunna get...

One of the biggest conflicts I'm having with a DIY screen is that the triplet alone was $200, I shouldn't be trying to get a screen for less than 10% of that... The more research I do it's looking like skimping on the triplet would have been better than skimping on the screen...

I would disagree. A white screen is a white screen. You did the right thing. The optics is more important. Just be aware if you are buying only a matte white screen then the Parkland or Doable will perform just as well. When I put my Dalite Matte White sample on my screen when watching I can't even tell where it is at. Unless you are planning on the High Power or something else that is high gain then you don't have to spend alot of money.

Good luck,
Brian

Out of curiosity, how can you tell the difference between the good and bad parkland plastics products? I found a few suppliers in the area, and I might go pick up a screen tomorrow. 48" x 96" ... that's 107" baby!

i live in california where the do-able products inc. company is based and i can't even find the products and there phone number no longer works..

Not sure. I think the newer stuff is shiny. You can call Parkland and they can tell you. From what I have heard they are helpful.

I would post your question in the Doable thread over avsforum.com. I am sure somewhere there can direct you to finding some.

Edited: Here is the Doable thread link. Doable Thread at AVS Fourm It is still active so I know people are still buying it.

Checked at the Lowes here in McDonough, GA. They do not have the Parkland Plastics boards unfortunately, and they called the company for me, which I thought was pretty good customer service. The folks at Parkland said they knew exactly what I was asking about (cheap screen material) and said they were sorry ... it had been discontinued 4 months ago.

So, no Doable and no parkland for weldonjb. SNIFF

yea Parland Plastics Board is discontinued, but now they have Parkland Elite Projection Panel and it comes with a 3" black border and sells for $150/sheet... biggrin.gif

... just kiddin'

... really too bad as it was many peoples way to a cheap alternative screen... you can always get a sheet of that shiny board (thin stuff, kind of MDF'ish on the back with a white coating on the front)... then paint it with ultra pure white... panel is about $10-11 and paint another $5-15... still pretty inexpensive...

cheers,

I am pretty sure this stuff is actually just corrugated plastic sheets. You can find them at ANY HD. Pretty basic product, i am probably going to use those for my screen.
