As I read through the past, I mean the forums, every year Brain changes his mind over split and unsplit setups.

So, I am going to ask, what is better?

I am looking at the sharp 15.4" 1900x1200 panel. Resolution to me is the top priority (I want to be able to use this as a computer monitor for CAD/Photoshop as well as gaming and HDTV)

If I go with a split design, will the distortion caused by the Pro fresnel (with the .5mm pitch) be noticable? Does it make any difference to do with the 3Dlens.com 550mm fresnel with a .2mm pitch?

Or should I go with the unsplit design? How much light do you really lose in the corners if the light is entering the LCD 20 degress off perpendicular?

Thanks,
Caitlyn

Well, from what I have read, the positive of going split is allowing you to have your projection keystoned. If keystoning is not a necessity in your case and you are just doing a straight shoot, unsplit should be the choice.

In the split setup, light passes the frensel, the lcd, another frensel, then the triplet lens. In the unsplit setup, light passes both frensels first, the lcd, then the triplet. Once the light passes through the lcd, the light afterwards is the image projected, so the more this light has to keep passing lenses and such, the more disorted the result projection could be. Many people say that the unsplit setup gives a brighter projection than the split.

The two camps are:

1) Split means light from LCD (with image) passes through filed fresnel and you don't want anything in the image path, so go unsplit

2) Unslipt means that light is already directed towards triplet (this requires an angle for anything but the center of the :LCD) and the LCD is designed for light to pass through at a right angle, so you need tp go split.

Both seem to make sense and there are drawbacks to both. People have had sucess with both and neither is a clear winner. If you need keystoning then you are pretty much forced into a split setup, unless someone gets a good handle on lens shift. Neither is significantly better or worse than the other so just choose one.
