Full Version: Recommended Res. For Composite Video?

I Would like to build a projector soon, but I don't want to go with an expensive High Resolution LCD if I don't need it.

My Question is, with a standard dvd player (no PS) using composite video, will a resolution of 480 x 234 work fine?
Also, how big do you think the image will be able to get upto (in terms of pixelation)? Thanks

The bottom line for most DVD players is 480p, which I believe is 854x480 (either that or 800x480). Then there is 720p, which is as high as DVDs will go, at 1280x720. I guess there is 1080i (but I don't believe in interlaced..). That being said, you would still be able to watch DVDs using this panel, the LCD would probably just scale the res. output from the DVD player to match the res. of the LCD.

With a resolution of 480x234, I suspect anything larger than about 60" becomes too pixelated to watch comfortably. But even at 60" I believe pixels would be fairly noticeable.

If I were using it, I'd shoot for about 40-50" for a good medium between sharpness and size.

There are many people who have built PJs with a comparable resolution. The PSONE LCD is 320x240, and many have used these to make nice PJs. I think TESCORP just built a very nice one for RedDog, but he hasn't yet posted any pics of the projection.

So do you think it would just be better for me to get a 1024 x 600 Panel? Because I would like a 60" image, but I really don't want any pixels noticeable from watching distance (10+ ft.)

If the decision is between 480x234 or 1024x600, then it's a no brainer. Higher is better.

Have look at Yoshuaspawns 2nd PLOG (I have a link in the first post of my PLOG, at the bottom), he used a toshiba 1024x600 with amazing results. You could go bigger than 60" with that res.

DVD resolution or D1 is supposed to be 720x480, so anything in that range would be fine 480x234 is close to what VHS tape outputs (i.e. not that great). 800x600 is probably the best unless you can fine 854x480 which is a popular resolution in commercial projectors but basicly nonesisent in regular LCDs. The 7" lilliput does 800x480 which is the closest of general purpose, but the 8" HAMI has better contrast (800x600 res). If you want cheap and simple 480x234 would work if you want good Image quality go with the Lilliput or HAMI (Hami is better quality and cheaper).

I decided for $15 more, I can get a much better quality projetcor (I Hope).

Just kidding. I'm assuming you got a Toshiba portable you're going to strip?

Haha, did you really bid on it? That is what I will strip, but I have yet to receive it.
