Ok, so i signup here a little while back, bought some lenses, but never whent further...

But now my 27" died, so i'm getting back into it. I have a nice big cabinet, so i'm gonna build an RPTV inside of it. I'm slowly gathering the required materials, so if anyone notices any mistakes, or possible improvements, please, let me know.

So the only thing I've bought so far is my lcd a CTX S501A 15"

I couldn't find anyone using this monitor, so i hope it works out..

here's the capinet i'm using.. kinda hard to see, but the main dark part is all empty, and i'm gonna empty out the bottom shelves, and have a second mirror with the lcd and lighting going off to the side, near the bottom of the cabinet.

Here's a drawing.. not the best pic again.

Focal Calc Lenghts:

LCD : 12"
Triplet FL : 320mm
LCD Distance : 18"
Screen Dist. : 40"
Screen size : 28x21 (35" diag)

I'm gonna buy the LL std lenses and light bulb, figure i can find the rest in town or on ebay.

cheers,
StratCat
What are you gonna use as screen material? I haven't checked out the RP plogs recently, but as I recall that was the major stumbling block - finding something that was opaque enough to show an image but light enough to stay bright and not fuzz detail.

From what I can tell the best stuff is still the mylar (a.k.a. polyester-based) film paper. Its really cheap to try it (about 20$!)

If your going through all the work of building this why dont you go for someting bigger than 35 in?
dubious
a few reasons..

one, my cabinet is only 18" deep, so i would need to extend the back, or move the screen forward (or change the angles on the mirrors, but i like the simple 45 degrees...)

two my living room isn't that big, my couch is at most 8 feet from by tv

three, i've heard brightness can be an issue with rptvs, so i'm hoping a 400W setup with two FS mirrors and a 35" screen will be nice and bright.

here's an updated, scaled drawing.. let me know if i've done anything wrong, as i will order mirrors soon..

well it's been six days since i won the monitor on ebay, and he never sent me an invoice for shipping to Canada, so screw him.

Just got a better monitor, a bit more expensive, but better specs..

yeah, i know, it'll be a while.. lol
but at least i know what i'm getting into, not like two years ago.. when i first started building one, welll ordered lenses.. then sold them

so here's a Cost Tally for my RPTV (all prices include shipping and are in $CND):

  • LCD $115
  • LL Lens $50
  • Tempered Glass $10
  • 2 LED Fans $10
  • New FS Mirror (24x18) $150 (not yet purchased)
  • 1000W Bulb and Ballast $110 (still pending)
  • Mylar screen $25
still need more stuff, but so far $470

You might be able to obtain a large FS mirror free from a deceased RPTV at a local TV repair shop.
A screen and fresnels also.

free is always good.. the mirror is my most expensive part so far..

Personally I wouldn't buy the 1000w set up. If I were you I'd look into ceramic arcs, this bulb is ok http://www.bulbs.com/products/product_deta...inventory=13318 and runs off an S51 ballast. Check Ebay, I got that same bulb for 7$ smile.gif
