I've already ordered lenses from lumenlab. But before a begin I was wondering if I a 17'' would have been s wiser choice.
15'' iseasy since it's easy to find a fresnels.
Does someone have made it with a 17 inch, where to get fresnel? does light is a probleme? size?
If you look at must 17'' specs you will notice that they have normally a higher contrast ratio than 15''. price are getting lower and best of all they do native 1280x1024.
HDTV 780p require 1280x780 resolution. From a 15'' we could only goes up to 480p...
I would like to build the PJ for my XBOX, I will probably buy the X2VGA adaptor.
any suggestion?

We are having lenses manufactured for this reason. Should be within the next 2 months.

I think you have your HD resolutions messed up too.
The standard HD resolution is 720p which fits fine in a 15" panel at 768 lines high.
What you won't be able to do is 1080i, even with a 17" panel.

Hi,
About 720p, yes vertical lines fit in a 1024x768 panel. But horiz doesnt fit. YOu need 1280 pixels (width) for a 16/9 (widescreen) ratio.
the 1080i is actually 2x540 interlace and is not necessary better quality than 720p cause 720p is 60 frame/sec (in theory) and 30 for 1080i.
Progressive looks always better than interlace.

Finally,
Im planning to go on a 17 inches (will I be the first? )anyway. since I have already the lenses for the 15' I will only use the 1024x768 resolution with disabled scaling so the image will be the exact same size as the 15'. I will try to fit the fresnel in the center of the panel I will simply puts opac material over the unused edge of the panel.
It will have the "advantage" of being upgradable.
Will this drop the number of lumens projected to the screen?
any advice?
thanks.

Well it would be best to mask the unused portion of the panel.

I was discussing the merits of this approach with a friend last night and I think it sounds like a good way to go. Get the benefits of the higher contrast and resolution with the standard lenses and upgrade when the larger fresnels become available. The only thing I was curious about is whether a larger triplet would be needed to project the full width of a 17" panel.
Price wise the 17" panels are only $20 dearer for much more res and better contrast.
What I'd really like to find is a source of 1280x960 widescreen panels with 600:1 contrast. That'd be sweet
Fact is that 4:3 is dead in the water, HD doesn't use it at all, neither do the vast majority of DVD's.
Cheers,
Arkay.

Indeed 4/3 will die soon. Many DVD offer widescreen (letter box) However It's still possible to make a widescreen from a 1280x1024 res just put something to hide black edges
ANd BTW DVDHD is on the way, there's few country planning on it

BTW brainchild, do you think I'm gonna have to make my box little bit longer to be safe when upgrading?

If you go with the new lens you will end up adding 7-8" to the front of the enclosure.
